Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films held the Los Angeles Premiere of THE TEMPEST at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on December 6th.
Across the street at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater was the premiere of Paramount’s THE FIGHTER, so needless to say Hollywood was very busy and the street was closed from Highland to Orange for this special night. This was not the first time that two premieres were held almost at the same time, but it was timed so that after I finished shooting THE TEMPEST, I was able to go over and cover THE FIGHTER.
Academy Award-nominated Julie Taymor (ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, FRIDA, TITUS) directed this screen adaptation of this Shakespeare’s mystical thriller. Taymor brings an original dynamic to the story by changing the gender of the sorcerer Prospero into the sorceress Prospera, portrayed by Oscar winner Helen Mirren (THE QUEEN). Prospera’s journey spirals through vengeance to forgiveness as she reigns over a magical island, and cares for her young daughter, Miranda (Felicity Jones).
Walking the carpet were the stars of the film, which included Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Alan Cumming, Chris Cooper, Djimon Hounsou, Julie Taymor (director/writer/producer), and Elliot Goldenthal (composer).
Joining them were guests, which included Katy Perry, Rich Ross (Chairman of Walt Disney Studios), Jadin Gould, Kimora Lee, Carla Ortiz, Lauren Mayhew, James C. Burns, Nancye Ferguson, Tommy Davidson, and Michelle LaFrance.
THE TEMPEST is rated PG-13 and opened in theaters on December 10th, in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and with limited expansion on December 17th.
