While at today’s 2011 Comic Con in San Diego, Andrew Garfield spoke to the press about finally taking over the role of Peter Parker aka Spider-man in the new reboot THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.
Having been a big fan since he was a kid, he loved the chance to be the poster boy for all skinny kids around the world who wish they could transform into a crime-fighting super hero.
“I like the idea of a skinny kid beating up bad guys,” says Garfield. “It’s a dream of mine and what a way to do it so you can give other skinny kids in the audience that achievement as well.”
In terms of stepping in Tobey Maguire’s big shoes as the second big screen incarnation of the webslinger, Garfield says he has nothing but love for what Maguire brought to the characters previously.
“I love Tobey Maguire’s interpretation of the character,” says Garfield. “It’s one of the things that rekindles and reminds me how much his character means to me. When I watch that first Spidey film, I lost my mind. I watched it back to back, twice in a row when I first saw it.”
The other thing that Garfield was appreciative of, was being contacted by Tobey Maguire, who gave the young actor his blessing.
“[Tobey] sent a very, very, very nice email once it was announced,” says Garfield. “He gave me his blessing. It meant the world to me, because I respect him so much in general and also what he did with the role.”
