X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:
REAL NAME: Sean Cassidy
FIRST APPEARANCE: [Uncanny] X-Men #28- 1967
Banshee is yet another of those later 60’s mutants that could be classified as a sort of second generation or second class. He was part of the new team which debuted in GIANT SIZED X-MEN #1 which introduced such classic and timeless characters as Colossus, Storm, and Nightcrawler, and re-introduced Wolverine. Banshee first appeared as a bad guy but he was under mind control. His abilities include his sonic scream, which allows him to ‘fly’. He’s always been kind of a second string character in the comics, and he was probably at his coolest when he was running Generation X. Currently Banshee is deceased, but has been brought back from the dead from time to time.

IN THE MOVIE:
In the movie, Sean Cassidy (played by Caleb Landry Jones) still has his sonic powers and his ability to fly as a result of his sonic scream. The biggest difference is that he doesn’t have the thick Irish brogue that his dialogue was always written with in the comic books. Basically he’s the same character only younger, since he was considered the ‘old man’ of the team when the second set of X-Men came into being.
