X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:
REAL NAME: Alex Summers
FIRST APPEARANCE: Uncanny X-Men #54- 1969
Havok is pretty close to being a first class X-person in the comic books. He was part of essentially a second generation of mutants introduced in the late 60’s to the comic. Havok is the younger brother of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and both boys survived an airplane crash that seemingly claimed the lives of their parents. Havok was adopted and grew-up separate from his brother, only to be reunited when they were young men. Havok has the ability to generate extremely powerful plasma blasts, but more often than not has problems controlling his powers and has been forced at times to wear suits that help him keep them contained. At times he has been a hero and a villain, and a leader of the X-Men and X-Factor. Currently he is a star-faring superhero trying to bring about the downfall of his other brother who is the corrupt ruler of an alien empire.

IN THE MOVIE:
I’m guessing Alex (played by Lucas Till) is the older Summers brother in the movies, since he is old enough to be in prison. Other than that, the surly attitude, powers, and idea of a suit to direct them are the same. So he’s pretty darn close to comic book accurate.
