X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:
REAL NAME: Janos Quested
FIRST APPEARANCE: Uncanny X-Men #210- 1986
Riptide has always been one of those ‘MEH’ X-Men characters. He was first introduced as a part of the Marauders, a band of assassins assembled by the evil Mr. Sinister to slaughters the subterranean Morlocks (mutants who were deformed and lived in the sewers of New York). Riptide has the ability to spin his body creating a suction vortex that pulls materials in that he then flings back out as weapons; he also generates calcified projectiles. The only notable thing about Riptide is the fact that he has died multiple times. He keeps coming back though, thanks to the cloning technology of Mr. Sinister.

IN THE MOVIE:
Riptide (played by Álex González) is a flunky for Sebastian Shaw. He has absolutely no lines that I can remember, and he doesn’t dress in anything other than tailored suits. He has similar abilities, but seems most fond of generating whirlwinds with his hands. We do see him create larger scale twisters by spinning his body at great speeds (or at least that’s what I presume he is doing).
