At a press event on the 20th Century Fox lot today, producer Lauren Shuler-Donner presided over a presentation of all the special features to be found on the new X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Blu-ray hitting stories this Friday, September 9.
The bonus content includes the expected deleted and extended scenes and making-of featurettes on making the prequel/reboot to the X-MEN franchise. Additionally, the Blu-ray also includes 10 free digital X-MEN comic books and an interactive feature that takes you inside the mutant tracker system Cerebro.
ASSIGNMENT X had the opportunity to briefly speak with Shuler-Donner after the presentation in this exclusive interview where she discusses the hit summer film which chronicles the early friendship between Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and the formation of the X-Men.
ASSIGNMENT X: What really stood out for me on FIRST CLASS was the James Bond retro feels which made the movie feel very unique compared to the other X-films.
LAUREN SHULER-DONNER: That’s [director] Matthew [Vaughn]. Matthew wanted to make it more James Bond. We knew we wanted to reinvent it so it wasn’t like the other ones. He brought that James Bond part of it. The retro part, we fell into the time period, rather than fight it.
AX: Even though there are a lot of timeline issues with FIRST CLASS linking properly with the first three films, I also didn’t mind it and I didn’t hear too many complaints from the fans either.
SHULER-DONNER: I didn’t either, thank God. I was worried about it. I’m very aware that it should have been Scott Summers, not Havok, that it’s not the right Angel, it should have been Warren Worthington, but my partners wanted to take dramatic liberities and make it a good story. That’s really what it’s all about. So fortunately, fans went with us. It works, so let’s go for it.
AX: Is the plan to continue the X-MEN franchise with this new timeline and characters?
SHULER-DONNER: We’re seriously talking about that.
AX: How do you decide which characters to include since there are so many of them?
SHULER-DONNER: That’s tough. We try to get unique powers we haven’t seen before and get a character that represents something human. When we brought Nightcrawler into X2, Bryan Singer said “all the X-Men are beautiful, let’s get a character that is not so good looking” and Nightcrawler had a terrific power in that he could teleport and we didn’t have any characters that did it. That’s how Havok ended up [in FIRST CLASS] instead of Scott Summers, because he had a tough attitude and Matthew liked the power that came out of him. It’s hard to figure out which ones, and it’s harder to use new ones and stay within the timeline.
AX: What was the biggest challenge of this movie.
SHULER-DONNER: Getting it done was the biggest challenge and making it original and unique and able to survive in 2011.
AX: It’s interesting that the movie is set in the 1960s and yet it appealed to everybody without people being too confused about it.
SHULER-DONNER: They went with it. The tendency might have been to say, “it’s the ‘60s, audiences won’t understand, we’ll just gloss over it.” I think we embraced it and said “let’s do it.” History is fascinating anyway, so let’s pull the story of history into the movie” and it worked.
AX: What was the Josh Schwartz version of the FIRST CLASS script about?
SHULER-DONNER: That was very much of the comic book. Here’s the school. It was set in the 1960s, but it didn’t have any historical event to tie it. It was just the young kids at the school. We had seen that and done that. How could we be different? There was also another very big story within it.
