DVD Movie Review: THE RESIDENT

Rating: R Stars: Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lee Pace, Christopher Lee, Aunjanue Ellis Writers: Antti Jokinen & Robert Orr Director: Antti Jokinen Distributor: Image Entertainment Release Date: March 29, 2011 Hammer Films is back in business, and THE RESIDENT is true to that venerable studio’s old form, even including a supporting turn from that company’s biggest star, Christopher Lee. These are probably good reasons to see THE RESIDENT, which hews a little too closely to the old days in style. What was deemed terrifying in the ‘50s and ‘60s is now a bit tame, and what was accepted as […]Read On »

INSIDIOUS teaser poster | ©2011 FilmDistrict

Accomplished actress Barbara Hershey is no stranger to psychological thrillers. Her recent turn in the mind-bending drama BLACK SWAN earned her critical praise and her intense performances are always riveting to watch. Opening Friday is her new film INSIDIOUS where Hershey plays a grandmother to a young boy who is being haunted by spirits that are placing the whole family in danger. This isn’t the first time Hershey has been involved in a paranormal film. She was a mother disrupted and sexually assaulted by a spirit in 1982’s creepy cult classic THE ENTITY which was based on a well-document true […]Read On »

Interview: NO ORDINARY FAMILY star Michael Chiklis becomes Super-Dad

Michael Chicklis in NO ORDINARY FAMILY - Season 1 | ©2010 ABC/Bob D'Amico

In ABC’s NO ORDINARY FAMILY, the Powells come back from vacation much less ordinary than when they left. Mother Stephanie (Julie Benz) has super-speed, young son J.J. (Jimmy Bennett) has super-intelligence and teenager Daphne (Kay Panabaker) can read minds. As for family father Jim, played by Michael Chiklis, he is suddenly strong enough to toss a car, muscular enough to leap on top of a building and hardy enough to stop bullets. Chiklis has been involved in the superhero genre before, playing Ben Grimm/Thing in the two big screen adaptations of  FANTASTIC FOUR. On television, he spent five years as […]Read On »

THE GOOD WIFE’s Julianna Marguiles takes time off the set to promote her hit drama’s second season. Playing a lawyer, says Marguiles, 44, isn’t unlike that of portraying a doctor on ER. Things happen very quickly, sometimes in a ridiculously short period of time, all for the sake of good drama. TAKE 1 On how, unlike in real life, things happen very quickly on TV… “Well, it has to because it’s only a 42-minute show,” says Marguiles. ” I mean, my husband is a lawyer, and the first time he saw (the show) — he wasn’t a big television watcher.  […]Read On »

CD Review: THE WAY BACK

THE WAY BACK soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande Records

It’s been a twelve-year trek for Burkhard Dallwitz to re-unite with director Peter Weir since THE TRUMAN SHOW. And while Dallwitz certainly didn’t undergo the trans-continental travails of THE WAY BACK, the stirring empathy that he gives to his second, and long overdue collaboration with Weir certainly pays tribute to the need for freedom, one that drove the film’s characters from Siberia to India. As the soundtrack starts out with an eerie mix between dark orchestral sustains, gnarled chords, subdued ethnic percussion and an overall aura of unknowable doom, you might think you’re listening to a soundtrack about Gulag escapees […]Read On »

CD Review: LITTLE FOCKERS soundtrack

It’s not easy to follow in the footsteps of Randy Newman, even for Randy Newman, given the diminishing returns of the sequels to the undeniably great MEET THE PARENTS. And while the third time isn’t a charm for the at-times amusing LITTLE FOCKERS, composer Stephen Trask certainly does his darndest to make things funny. Given his broadest comedy to score for his fourth pairing with director Paul Weitz after their clever work with IN GOOD COMPANY, AMERICAN DREAMZ and THE VAMPIRE’S ASSISTANT, Trask makes the wise choice of stepping into Randy Newman’s shoes at first. It’s a nice job of […]Read On »

BEING HUMAN started life as a BBC series, created by Toby Whithouse, about three Londoners sharing a flat, who just happen to be, respectively, a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost. Syfy Channel has now made a Boston-set version of the show, with Sam Witwer as vampire Aidan, Sam Huntington as werewolf Josh , Meaghan Rath as ghost Sally and Mark Pellegrino as Aidan’s bloodsucking mentor/maker Bishop. While Whithouse is a producer on the new version, the executive producers/show runners are Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke, who sit together on a couch as they talk about all their characters who […]Read On »
