CD Review: THE TOURIST soundtrack

THE TOURIST soundtrack | ©2010 Varese Sarabande Records

Forget Johnny Depp. No man is proving to be a more reliable companion to Angelina Jolie’s mysterious allure like James Newton Howard, who turns in his second terrific score for the actress after this year’s SALT. While there’s a surfeit of that film’s ballsy spy action here, THE TOURIST is mostly plying the same kind of luxurious, old-world waters that Henry Mancini and John Barry did when movies like CHARADE and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE were the height of escapist fashion- a throwback appeal that THE TOURIST pulls off with panache. Most of this music is the elegant equivalent of […]Read On »

CD Review: HAPPY NOW soundtrack

Happy Now soundtrack | ©2010 Movie Score Media

Euro-specialist label Movie Score Media now goes digging into the ghosts of their favored composers’ pasts with their “Discovery Collection”- a cool niche within a niche that reveals what might be a real spook with 2001’s long-buried score to HAPPY NOW. And it’s likely that ATONEMENT Oscar winner Dario Marianelli is similarly smiling due to the light that MSM is shining on his atypically wacky mystery score for an uber-serious composer, one which chronicles a Welsh politician’s amazement that the girl he and his mate most definitely murdered years ago is now back in town. Listening to the soundtrack’s Theremin-like […]Read On »

It’s hard to believe that SMALLVILLE is coming to an end after 10 seasons on the air, but this Spring, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) will finally grow into the Superman we all know and love. And guiding Clark on his mission since Season 4 (obviously and not so obviously)  has been Lois Lane played to perfection by Erica Durance. The timeline for SMALLVILLE has clearly veered from the pre-existing Superman mythology to take some wonderful detours along the way – and this year alone, Clark has already proposed to Lois which has taken the Lois and Clark relationship into new […]Read On »

In the last episode of Starz’s SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND, Spartacus, played by Andy Whitfield, set the stage for revolt by putting a blade through the throat of gladiator owner Batiatus, played by John Hannah. Hannah, whose credits include the MUMMY films and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, understandably thought that his SPARTACUS job was over, but then Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hoping Whitfield would be able to return to work after a year, the SPARTACUS producers decided that instead of doing a conventional second season, they would instead to a prequel, SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA, showing […]Read On »

Movie Review: SANCTUM

SANCTUM movie poster | ©2011 Universal Pictures

James Cameron, who executive-produced SANCTUM, is famous for his love of diving, and although he did not direct this film, that passion and its cause are evident throughout. We see one breathtaking underwater vista after another, brought to us in uncommonly effective 3D. Most films waste the format – not so SANCTUM. Under Alister Grierson’s direction, we get a wonderful sense of how rock shelves in caves stretch out at a particular distance and we practically get vertigo watching water thunder down deep drops. Indeed, as the film opens and we have one of our few encounters with civilization, a few roof shacks appear to extend out into the theatre, roughly two rows in front of the viewer. It’s great.
