It’s been a while since John Debney got to score a body count thriller after the savage likes of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, END OF DAYS and THE RELIC, as well as the more beatific spirit of the underrated DRAGONFLY. Now as he enters a DREAM HOUSE that holds the spirits of a murdered family, Debney’s ghost leads with both the heart and raised hair follicles. For this horror take on THREE’S COMPANY, a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf try their hand at co-habitation with results that would have made mincemeat out of Mr. Roper in the BBC series BEING HUMAN. Director William Malone gave the somnambulist thrills of THE CABINET OF DR. It’s one thing to take off old school musical exploitation, but it’s another to actually get the groove down to the point where you think you’ve just stumbled upon some beat-up soundtrack LP found under the seat of a filth-encrusted grindhouse theater, circa 1975 Times Square. While Adrian Young perfectly nailed this Blaxploitation vibe for BLACK DYNAMITE, Giallos Flame’s score for the infinitely more sordid BLACK DEVIL DOLL goes way beyond the Afro rhythms to completely nail the sound of Italo horror. The term “whistling in the dark” took on a whole new meaning when Mark Snow’s cheerfully sinister main title theme first announced agents Mulder and Scully on the Fox channel in 1993. With its telltale vocalizations abetted by undulating, eerie percussion, Snow’s Emmy-nominated main title joined STAR TREK, LOST IN SPACE and THE BRADY BUNCH as one of the most instantly identifiable themes in television history. Sure horror scores before 1996 raised their voice more than occasionally. But it took Marco Beltrami to send the genre into a true fugue state with the cacophony of SCREAM’s outrageous symphonic kills, creating a whole new impactful sound for slashers and demons alike, not to mention setting the thematic template for three more franchise scores to come.
