Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Salvatore Stabile Director: Matt Earl Beesley Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 5, 2011 One of the devout wishes I had for REVENGE, a supposed modernized look at THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO in which Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) seeks to trash everyone connected with her father’s wrongful arrest and conviction for crimes he did not commit, was that it would not turn into Emily’s victim of the week. Alas, the show seems to be headed in just that direction. The show is set in the Hamptons, where […]Read On »

TV Review: AMERICAN HORROR STORY – Season 1 – “Pilot” – Series Premiere

AMERICAN HORROR STORY poster | © 2011 FX

Stars: Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, Taissa Farmiga, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Alexandra Breckenridge, Jamie Brewer Writers: Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk, series created by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk Director: Ryan Murphy Network: FX, Wednesdays @ 10 PM Original Telecast: October 5, 2011 It’s difficult to do serialized straight-up horror on a weekly television series, which is probably why almost no one ever tries it. Before anyone cites, for example, THE X-FILES and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, let us remember that the former had as one of its mottos “I Want to Believe” and “Trust No […]Read On »

TV Review: SOUTH PARK – Season 15 – “Ass Burgers”

Cartman and the school nurse in SOUTH PARK - Season 15 - "Ass Burgers" | ©2011 Comedy Central

Writer: Trey Parker Director: Trey Parker Network: Comedy Central, airs Wednesday nights Original Telecast: October 5, 2011 June’s mid-season finale of SOUTH PARK  ended on the brilliant “You’re Getting Old” episode where Stan realized that by turning ten, the world had literally turned to crap and he had become a miserable cynic. The episode ended with his parents getting a divorce and Stan moping around town as the Stevie Nicks song “Landslide” played. It was a brilliant end to an uneven Season 15, and as the second half of SOUTH PARK returns with “Ass Burgers,” we get the pay-off that […]Read On »

Catherine Kresge in RCVR | ©2011 Science 2 Fiction/Machinima

While many science-fiction series deal with uncovering the truth, the two main characters of RCVR, the new hit transmedia web series on Machinima, are actually looking to cover up the truth. The six-part series (Episode 4 debuts Wednesday on Machinima) is directed and created by David Van Eyssen and set in 1973. Daniel Bonjour and Catherine Kresge play Luke Weber and Sandy Bergson, SIGMA operatives tasked with covering up a UFO sighting in rural Arkansas. However, they soon discover that Weber may play a bigger role in this phenomenon than he realizes. For Kresge, getting a chance to play such […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Wes Craven talks about SCREAM 4 DVD and the future of the franchise

Ghost Face in SCREAM 4 | ©2011 The Weinstein Company

It’s rare for a filmmaker to helm all four installments in a movie franchise, but like Steven Spielberg did with the INDIANA JONES franchise, Wes Craven has matched that record with SCREAM. SCREAM 4, the latest chapter, hits DVD and Blu-ray this week as it reunites the surviving cast members from the previous three movies – Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette as they confronts the nefarious Ghost Face killer one more time as he (or she or more) terrorizes the quaint small town of Woodsboro. ASSIGNMENT X recently spoke with Wes Craven in this exclusive interview about the […]Read On »

Hank Azaria and Kathryn Hahn in FREE AGENTS | ©2011 NBC

In NBC’s Wed. 8:30 PM half-hour comedy FREE AGENTS, adapted from a British series of the same name (which airs Saturdays on BBC America), Hank Azaria plays Alex, who is absolutely miserable about his divorce. His friend Helen, played by Kathryn Hahn, is still reeling from the death of her fiancé. Alex and Helen wind up sleeping together, which Alex thinks might be a good first step, but Helen considers it disastrous, particularly because they both work together at a corporate PR firm. Todd Holland, a producer/director who famously shepherded MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, serves as the directing executive producer […]Read On »

CD Review: Tori Amos – NIGHT OF HUNTERS

Tori Amos - NIGHT OF HUNTERS | ©2011 Deutsche Grammophon

You never quite know which direction Tori Amos is going to zigzag in. She’s an avant garde pop princess who burst onto the scene in the early ‘90s as that decade’s answer to Kate Bush. Her piano playing was impeccable and her knack for catchy songwriting with deep messages made her debut LITTLE EARTHQUAKES a phenomenal and still potent debut. Since then she’s followed the beat of her own offbeat drummer with highs and lows. She never sits still long enough to question her decisions and her latest NIGHT OF HUNTERS is perhaps the most challenging work to date. It’s […]Read On »

If so, GLEE – Season 3 may have officially started. “Asian F” is one of those startlingly good episodes of GLEE – one that sneaks up from behind and reminds you why the show can be so good and focused when it wants to be. Martinez, Chynna Phillips, Hope Solo Network: ABC, airs Mondays, Tuesdays Original Telecast: October 4th, 2011 Mary J. Blige opened DANCING WITH THE STARS tonight to an excitable audience after all the melodrama of last night’s “most memorable year” show. If last night’s show was heavy tonight’s was the opposite. It was as if a load had been lifted. DWTS therapy was in session. And then came the shocker! Kristin Cavallari was eliminated from the show. Wow! Although she and partner Mark Ballas tied for […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Head Case”

Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic and Jon Huertas in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Head Case" | ©2011 ABC/Adam Taylor

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Writer: David Grae Director: Holly Dale Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 3, 2011 The case latest CASTLE case starts with a lot of blood – enough that it’s pretty obvious that a stiff is involved. And Det. Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) are, for the moment, more absorbed in Castle’s daughter’s latest crisis. It seems Alexis (Molly Quinn) is learning the hard way the truth of that great Rolling Stones anthem, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Things […]Read On »
