Dominic West, Romola Garai and Ben Whishaw in THE HOUR - Season 1 | ©2011 Kudos Film & Television Ltd

In 1956 England, the BBC is trying out a different style of TV news program. News producer Bel Rowley (Romola Garai) doesn’t want to toe the government line about the rapidly heating-up Suez Canal crisis. Bel’s relationship with married anchorman Hector Madden (Dominic West) is likewise catching fire. Meanwhile, Bel’s chief researcher/best friend/genius Freddie Lyon (Ben Whishaw) pines for her while investigating a pair of murders that seem linked to a sinister conspiracy. Welcome to THE HOUR, the six-part period political thriller/murder mystery/newsroom drama premiering tonight on BBC America (it just aired in the U.K. on BBC2). Series creator/executive producer […]Read On »

CD Review: THE SENDER soundtrack (1,500 limited edition)

THE SENDER soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

Ever since his mystical synthesizers conjured the fog that King Uther rode on to begat Arthur in EXCALIBUR, composer Trevor Jones has had a distinctive charm of making for walls of hypnotic sound, their haunting, yet gently rolling sustains and siren voices for such scores as DARK CITY, ANGEL HEART and HIDEAWAY leading to some dark epiphany on the other side of reality. In the case of 1982’s THE SENDER, Jones’ ghostly melodic washes are the eerie visions that a young mental patient projects onto those unfortunate enough to be in his range. While there are any number of jarring […]Read On »

TV Review and Recap: AMERICA’S GOT TALENT – Season 6 – “Wild Card Round”

Twelve acts saved by the three judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT get a second shot at the semi-finals this week. Each judge brought back three acts  they felt deserved another chance to woo audiences. Ultimately, four of them will join the others in the semi finals. Although, it’s not clear if Mandel just brought back the acts that most irritated Morgan (Those Funny Little People in particular) or not, certainly the judges have differing opinions about who should get a do over and who should have never been invited back. Still, all seemed […]Read On »

On the upside, it’s fun and it lets us take a longer look at how the characters deal with issues besides what it […]Read On »

Fox as basketball-playing werewolf could be turned into a scary, darkly humored television series. AX knew better, having seen the pilot and the potential the series had, and now as the show concludes its first season, it stands tall as one of TV’s best […]Read On »

CD Review: PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW soundtrack

PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW soundtrack | ©2011 Film Score Monthly

One of those great, groovy WTF early 70’s flicks, PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW cast randy Rock Hudson as a football coach-cum-guidance counselor, whom most of the high school is falling in the sack, couch and car with when they aren’t falling over dead. While penned by of no less than STAR TREK’s Gene Roddenberry for the erotic directorial vision of BARBARELLA’s Roger Vadim, the swinging feather in MAIDS’ cap was its score by Lalo Schifrin. A master of pop jazz whose rhythms had accompanied no small amount of sensual lady killing before, Schifrin’s hepness play humorously well into […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: MTV’s TEEN WOLF star Jill Wagner is on the hunt

Jill Wagner in TEEN WOLF - Season 1 - "Magic Bullet" | ©2011 MTV

On MTV’s TEEN WOLF, which has its season one finale tonight at 10 PM (a second season arrives next year), it may be a toss-up as to which character is the scariest. Sure, that soft-talking homicidal Alpha wolf is menacing in monster form, but Jill Wagner’s beautiful, fanatical, gun-wielding Hunter Kate Argent seems just as capable of destroying the life of good-hearted young werewolf hero Scott McCall (Tyler Posey). North Carolina native Wagner is known to TV genre fans for her roles on BLADE: THE SERIES and STARGATE: ATLANTIS, while reality competition show viewers also know her for her hosting […]Read On »
