Movie Review: THE TREE OF LIFE

THE TREE OF LIFE poster | ©2011 Fox Searchlight

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, Fiona Shaw, Irene Bedard, Jessica Fuselier, Hunter McCracken, Laramie Eppler, Tye Sheridan Writer: Terrence Malick Director: Terrence Malick Distributor: Fox Searchlight Release Date: May 27, 2011 If the definition of a good movie is one that achieves its creator’s goals, THE TREE OF LIFE is possibly great. However, if the definition is also a movie that connects with its audience, TREE is a lot less great. Writer/director Terrence Malick has really huge ideas going on here – contrasting the enormity of creation, both on this planet and in the cosmos – […]Read On »

Movie Review: KUNG FU PANDA 2

KUNG FU PANDA 2 teaser poster | ©2011 Dreamworks

Rating: PG Stars: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Gary Oldman, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, Dustin Hoffman, Michelle Yeoh Writer: Jonathan Aibel & Glenn Berger Director: Jennifer Yuh Distributor: Dreamworks Animation Release Date: May 26, 2011 In a summer filled with lots of sequels, it’s not that easy to pick and choose which ones will be hits and which will be misses. KUNG FU PANDA 2 is one of the hits in my book. This animated sequel from Dreamworks picks up pretty much where the last movie left off. Po (Jack Black) is the Dragon Warrior and he fights for […]Read On »

CD Review: Lady Gaga – BORN THIS WAY

Lady Gaga - BORN THIS WAY | ©2011 Interscope Records

Distributor: Interscope Suggested Retail Price: $12.99 You have to hand it to Lady Gaga. She loves to let her freak flag fly, and she’s done such an amazing job of cultivating this performance-art persona, that she’s become more famous for what she wears, rather than what she’s actually singing. That of course is the big dichotomy her career is facing. She’s clearly pushed the envelope as far as she can with her costumes, and now, she really needs to start bringing the attention back to the fact that she’s not that bad a singer and a pretty accomplished songwriter (even […]Read On »

Movie Review: THE HANGOVER PART II

THE HANGOVER PART II final poster |©2011 Warner Bros.

Rating: R Stars: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zack Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong Writers: Craig Mazin & Scot Armstrong & Todd Phillips, based on characters created by John Lucas & Scott Moore Director: Todd Phillips Distributor: Warner Bros. Release Date: May 26, 2011 THE HANGOVER PART II isn’t especially funny. Don’t misunderstand – the movie isn’t direly un-funny like (random comparison) COP OUT. It’s genial, it has a plot that trots along decently, a good cast and gorgeous Thailand scenery. Still, it is struck somewhere between past glory that it can’t recreate and a new scenario that is better for […]Read On »

Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Legendary Pictures, A Green Hat Films Production presented the Los Angeles Premiere of THE HANGOVER PART II on May 19th at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Hollywood Boulevard was closed between Highland and Orange to accommodate the fans, and all the press. The “black carpet” had HANGOVER printed on it and where I was standing they had big red letters stating the same. In THE HANGOVER PART II, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. Stu remembers the disastrous bachelor […]Read On »

CD Review: THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT: CATACLYSM soundtrack

THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT: CATACLYSM soundtrack | ©2011 Azeroth Music

While I don’t know if I’ll ever be a WORLD OF WARCRAFT addict in line for a pwn’ing, there are certainly enough gigantic stylings on this album to suck in a game music novice, let alone anyone who appreciates operatic fantasy scoring. That’s fitting for a CATACLYSM which unleashes a dragon who’d give Smaug a run for his money into WOW’s massive on-line universe, allowing the composing team of Russell Brower, Derek Duke, Neal Acree, David Arkenstone and Glenn Stafford to suit up in ragingly melodic armor. CATACLYSM is awash in a thrilling tone familiar to anyone who’s ever imagined […]Read On »

CD Review: PUSHING DAISIES – Season 2 original soundtrack

PUSHING DAISIES - Season 2 original soundtrack | © 2011 Varese Sarabande Records

If the sound of death can be called adorable, then Jim Dooley did the trick over the course of two seasons with the “forensic fairy tale” PUSHING DAISIES, wherein a baker brought the deceased back to life with usually eccentric results. It’s the kind of pokily sweet ghoulishness that Danny Elfman put on the map with BEETLEJUICE. And while there’s a healthy dose of that sound to go around this delightful 62-minute CD, Dooley somehow managed to pump up Elfman’s skull n’ bones bounce to new inspired heights in Season 2, turning the undead carnival into more of a waltz […]Read On »

Interview: THOR composer Patrick Doyle wields the mighty musical hammer

Thor soundtrack © 2011 Buena Vista Records

Save those puny electronic action scores for mere mortals. For if there’s one composer who’s brought down the symphonic thunder of the composing gods, then his name would be inscribed as Patrick Doyle. Receiving his musical and acting education in his native Scotland, Doyle’s dual artistic threats would strike up a winning collaboration with Kenneth Branagh, whom Doyle beat for an actual billing when both starred in CHARIOTS OF FIRE. Branagh would scantly toil in the background for long, as his theatrical flair allowed him to take a 9 million dollar gamble behind, and in front of the camera with […]Read On »

TV Review: SOUTH PARK – Season 15 – “Crack Baby Athletic Association”

Cartman and Kyle in SOUTH PARK - Season 15 - "Crack Baby Athetic Association" | ©2011 Comedy Central

Writer: Trey Parker Director: Trey Parker Network: Comedy Central, airs Wednesday nights Original Telecast: May 25, 2011 I’m starting to feel really guilty for ripping into SOUTH PARK so much. So far, Season 15 has been wildly uneven and after last week’s comeback episode “T.M.I.”, this week’s “Crack Baby Athletic Association” sends the show right back into the crapper again. After a brilliantly funny opening gag parodying those incredibly depressing Sarah McLachlan animal shelter commercials (substitute crack babies for animals), the episode never really comes together and then ends up becoming more about Slash as a surrogate Santa (more on […]Read On »
