Although Simon Cowell didn’t add much to the news of the recent ouster of judge Cheryl Cole from THE X FACTOR, his new U.S. reality singing competition airing on Fox this fall, he did clarify that it had nothing to do with not getting along with fellow judge Paula Abdul.
“If it was a question of getting along with Paula, I wouldn’t be on the show,” says Cowell with a grin while speaking via satellite at today’s Television Critics Association panel for THE X FACTOR.
Cowell notes that the idea was to get Cole back on the U.K. version when things weren’t working out on the U.S. version (she was replaced by X FACTOR host Scherzinger), but negotiations fell apart.
“I thought Cheryl returning to the U.K. [X FACTOR] would have been a big headline, good for the show and good for her,” says Cowell. “When you have to make a decision as a producer, you have to make hard decisions. If you get it wrong, you have to take it on the chin and I took it on the chin and Nicole has been a revelation.”
