Last year, Fox was going to develop a reality competition to find the next stars of its GLEE show. With so much going on with the producers on the show, the project never happened. Now Oxygen is launching a reality competition called THE GLEE PROJECT which will seek to find one person who will gain a role in Season Three of GLEE.
GLEE producers (including Ryan Murphy and Dante Di Loreto) will be involved, as well as GLEE’s casting director Robert Ulrich.
At today’s winter TCA session, the scoop on the show was revealed.
“We’re going to have one person who is going to have a role on GLEE,” says executive producer Michael Davies. “We have more than 40,000 people and then make a final judgment on 12 people who are going into GLEE boot camp. The idea is to bring forth what is unique about those individuals. Who is the most interesting – and to write for. That’s what they’re going to be looking at.”
Since no character has been written yet, Ulrich also notes that this is not a “singing, dancing or acting competition” but rather a place to find an unknown actor or actress who is unique and that will inspire the writers on the show.
“We’re looking for who is going to have that magic spot across all these characters for [the creators] to write for,” says Ulrich who notes there was no part for Chris Colfer when he originally came in to read for GLEE.
“When Chris Colfer auditioned in my office, there was no role for him, but there was another role that he wasn’t right for and [that character] never made it into the show,” says Ulrich. “So we’re working with someone like Ryan Murphy who is so open to writing for people and as a casting director, it’s so great to work with someone who thinks out of the box.”
