At first it seems like the normal banter between Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and author consultant Richard Castle (Nathan Filion) as they walk to the crime scene in the “Kill Shot” episode of CASTLE . Then Beckett lets it drop that she’s still in physical therapy as part of her recovery from the gun shot wound she got at the end of last season when a sniper shot her.
The victim was killed by a sniper, seemingly targeting his victims randomnly, and never mind that everyone knows that Beckett is coming apart at the seams, she keeps insisting she’s fine. Until even she has to admit she’s coming apart at the seams.
The best part is that this time she doesn’t know that it’s Castle behind her eventual rescue – Castle sends Detective Esposito (Jon Huertas) in to help in the way only Esposito can in an amazing scene between Katic and Huertas.
Those Castle fans who are disappointed by the darker turn the season seems to have taken (and there are those of us who can and will argue that point) will not be pleased by this episode. But even though it is pretty dark, with Beckett dealing with some nasty post-traumatic stress syndrome, ultimately, it’s one of the more hopeful episodes we’ve seen.
And, yeah, they find the killer, too, but as has been noted in this space before, the crime is generally the weakest part of the show. It’s the characters that make it and in this episode, they make it work wonderfully well.
