Outside of FUTURAMA, the FRINGE writing and producing team has to be the most intelligent science geeks the entertainment industry has ever assembled in one room. Put them together, and you could probably rule (or destroy) the world with the scientific theories and fringe science that’s explored on a weekly basis on either series.

And in “And Those We Left Behind”, we get a very complicated episode about time loop anomalies, but dressed in a very heartbreaking tale loyal husband Raymond (Stephen Root) trying to salvage the relationship with his genius wife (Romy Rosemont) from the early onset of Alzheimer’s.

The episode begins with some strange time displacement shifts that make Peter (Joshua Jackson) believe he might be responsible since his appearance is definitely out of sync with this universe. Soon he realizes there’s more to this, and discovers the source is not coming from him but from a makeshift machine that Raymond has created using his wife’s time travel calculations.

“And Those We Left Behind” is brilliant storytelling – complicated enough that it makes FRINGE stand out as such an original series, but accessible enough that any viewer could get sucked into the storytelling.

The episode also features an incredible performance from Root, who is primarily known for comedy. It’s a shame that science fiction shows rarely get Emmy love in the guest star category, because Root deserves one for his work here.

Mythology-wise, Peter’s appearance still disturbs Walter (John Noble) who has an uncomfortable reaction to him hanging around his office/home as he helps the Fringe division. Olivia (Anna Torv) slowly warms to Peter as well – realizing that Peter did love the Olivia that used to love him.

By episode’s end, it’s clear Peter needs to figure out a way to get back to the home he once knew.

Great direction by Brad Anderson and a brilliant script by Robert Chiappetta & Glen Whitman makes “And Those We Left Behind” one of the best FRINGE episode’s this season so far. People who haven’t checked out this series, don’t know what they’re missing.
