Network: MTV, airs Thursday nights
Original Telecast: October 27, 2011
With so many animated series vying for audience attention on network and cable television, GOOD VIBES feels like it’s come a little too late to the party.
It’s MTV’s companion piece of the return of BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD and it’s a nice fit – it has similar scatological humor, but it also doesn’t break any new ground either.
The premiere episode introduces us to the overweight Mondo (voice of Josh Gad). He’s just moved to the Sunny California beach town of Playa Del Toro with his hot mom Babs (Debi Mazar). Mondo is a bit insecure, but finds kinship with similar outcast Woodie (Adam Brody).
The two of them don’t fit in and even get harassed by the beach bully Turk (Jake Busey), but by working together, they find a way to fit in – plus Mondo finally gets the school’s hot girl Jeena (Olivia Thirlby) to notice him.
Much of GOOD VIBES centers on obvious penis jokes and other lowball humor of its ilk. Yet, for all its attempts at being crass and rude, it does have an innocent charm to it as well. It feels, in many ways, like a Fox network show – sort of like GOOD BURGERS. It’s a bit weird, a bit off, but it’s oddly tolerable. It also has a mid-1990s Nickelodeon cartoon vibe, but with far more raunch (though it retains a little of that Nick charm).
The voice cast is great too from BOOK OF MORMON’s Gad to Busey.
One of the funniest running gags is Mondo’s mom talking about all the other jobs she’s done – and it’s actually one of the better bits during the show.
GOOD VIBES is definitely targeting a certain MTV demographic. I’m not sure if people will find it altogether original and fresh, but it certainly pairs up nicely with BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD and if it can retain that audience, then there may be a long life in store for GOOD VIBES no matter how derivative it may seem.
