Man, SMALLVILLE likes cramming a lot into an episode (then again, with only handful of episodes left, they have no choice).
“Scion” is a Luthor-centric episode, as Tess (Cassidy Freeman) comes to Clark (Tom Welling) to reveal that the Lex Luthor clone called Alexander (Lucas Grabeel) only has half of Lex’s DNA, but half of Clark’s DNA too – and he’s starting to realize he has super powers.
Tess wants Clark to be a brother and mentor, but Alex, who now goes by the name of Conner, is young, impetuous and thinks he knows better. When he overhears Clark revealing the truth that he’s a Luther, Conner seeks out alterna-Lionel Luthor (John Glover) who places a red kryptonite ring on him, making him evil.
Well, temporary evil, until he realizes he wants to be good and wants to trust and listen to Clark. Clark even enrolls him at Smallville High as Conner Kent.
By the end of the episode, Conner is wearing a black T-shirt with the “S” symbol on it. Guess we know how Clark gets the bright idea to put the House of El symbol on his super suit later on down the road.
Tess also usurps Lionel’s power over her – and finds the smoking gun that ousts him as a fake.
“Scion” is a strong episode that continues Clark’s journey to Superman. The show continually crams in at least one “prophetic” dialogue scene that gets us closer to the Superman mythology we’re all familiar with.
Unlike last week’s “Fortune” episode, this one doesn’t get too heavy with the slapstick and is more focused on serious hero building.
However, one of the best bits of the episode revolves around Conner’s unhealthy infatuation with Lois, and how he can hardly contain his heat blasting eyes when he first sees her.
SMALLVILLE is leading up to something big. You can feel it. You know it. And since we’re aware that Michael Rosenbaum will be returning as Lex Luthor, it’s exciting trying to figure out how they’ll stage his resurrection. Will Conner become Rosenbaum – or do the writers have something even better up their sleeves?
SMALLVILLE returns mid-April with new episodes. It’s hard to believe the long-running show is almost over, but with Welling slowly growing and maturing into the Man of Steel, it’s a journey that I can’t wait for. It’s also bittersweet in knowing that this is the end of the road as well.
