A corrupt city official who walked after a jury is hung is the centerpiece of the “Bathhouse & Hinky Dink” episode of THE CHICAGO CODE.

With only a couple of days to find enough dirt on this official to keep him from walking before all charges are dropped it’s up to cops Wysocki (Jason Clarke) and Evers (Matt Lauria) to work fast.

Superintendent Colvin (Jennifer Beals) is antsy to get this thing wrapped us as well, and manipulated Alderman Gibbons (Delroy Lindo), allowing him to think he’s redirecting her attentions in exchange for some over time for her beat cops.

The twist and turns of this episode also involve deep undercover Liam (Billy Lush) who has ingratiated himself within the Irish mob and Gibbons himself. He’s at the heart of the operation which he successfully maneuvers without getting made.

By episode’s end, they get the goods on Gibbons and are able to launch a secret investigation into his activities now that they can finally tie some major crimes to him. They’ve now opened up a war against the most powerful man in the city. Cool!

While many things happen in this episode, “Bathhouse & Hinky Dink” relies more on tension and suspense than some of the heavier action we’ve seen in previous episodes. It also reveals more about Wysocki’s past – and how his brother was also an undercover cop who was found dead when the bad guys made him. He worries about Liam, and the episode is about Wysocki’s fears that another good cop might go down undercover and he couldn’t stand for that to happen again.

Another interesting side note involves Wysocki’s cop niece Vonda (Devin Kelley) and her relationship with her hotshot partner Isaac (Todd Williams). She doesn’t want to keep her relationship a secret from her uncle and it becomes a source of tension between the two. While the character building stuff is good, their side-sting operation involving the car Isaac is putting up for sale is actually pretty dull, especially since it interferes with all the other interesting bits revolving the main story.

With three episodes to go, it looks like Season 1 will be amping up the takedown of Gibbons in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see how this plays out (and if it gets wrapped up) since Fox still hasn’t made a commitment for renewal. It doesn’t help matters that the promos say “Only Three More Episodes.” Not “Three More Episodes until the Season Finale.” Hopefully my paranoia is just that – paranoia.
