In what has become one of the most boring AMERICAN IDOL competitions since Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox battled it out on Season 9, the reality show competition whittled down the contestants from three to two with Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez.
That meant the powerhouse singer with the golden Gospel voice Joshua Ledet was eliminated.
Jennifer Lopez was in tears as Ledet sang his swan song, “It’s A Man’s, Man’s World” and brought his mom up on stage. Meanwhile, Phillips and Sanchez breathed a sigh of relief going into next week which, not surprising, will see Phillips take the crown.
How is that possible? Because, the Tween girls rule AMERICAN IDOL (the last time a female contestant won was 2006), so, barring any terrible song choices, Phillips is a pretty obvious shoo-in.
That’s not to say that Phillips doesn’t deserve it either. Honestly, of the two, he is the more interesting performer. He’s unique, he does his own thing and he’s made an impression on the audience. It’s clear mentor Jimmy Iovine sees the potential in him and if they can carve out a solid album for the kid, he might have some legs.
Sanchez on the other hand is a young girl, with some solid pipes, but an under-developed personality. She’s a work-in-progress, which is a good thing, but it’s difficult building up such a young personality without the right songs. And with the terrible song selection they gave her on Wednesday night’s show, that could prove disastrous in making her debut album as well (anyone remember how they destroyed Allison Iraheta with her first album in Season 8 by trying to make her sound like P!NK).
The rest of the results show included an unexceptional performance by Adam Lambert who still has the pipes, but is still struggling to find the right songs that match them. He’s really one of the best that IDOL has produced, but, like many contestants who get record deals, he struggles to find the material that best suits his voice and personality too.
While AMERICAN IDOL has taken some hits this year in the ratings, let’s hope next year the series finds a way to mix up its contestants better, have judges that don’t coddle mediocre performers and slam frontrunners so they get early elimination and find a way to remedy this whole song problem where contestants fail miserably when they have to connect to songs from artists long past their prime (Billy Joel anyone?)
Good luck to Phillips and Sanchez – it will be a very interesting, though likely predictable AMERICAN IDOL finale indeed.
