MOVIES
IMMORTALS – The soon-to-be new Superman, Henry Cavill, stars in this tale of gods versus men from the producers of 300. Rich in CGI, the film is action packed with a number of cool moments and battles that only serve to enhance even more CGI moments. It is a CGI smorgasbord. While the plotline is a little thin on pretty much anything, in a film like this it is more about how it looks than what you are getting in the plot and on Blu-ray it looks even that much better. Special features include an alternate opening, two alternate endings, a host of featurettes and more.
THE LION KING II: SIMBA’S PRIDE – While not nearly as charming or classic as the original’s storyline and heart, kids that enjoy the first one and watch it again and again will be thrilled to find more adventures from Disney featuring their favorite characters. Luckily, they were smart in making it similar to the first but different and they kept the cast intact including favorites Timon and Pumbaa as well as Nala, Rafiki and two new cubs that cause all sorts of havoc – seem familiar? Worth it if your children love the original.
LION KING 1 AND HALF – This is a Timon and Pumbaa tale told from their perspective and how they met Simba and much more. Again, a must have for kids that love the Disney classic.
And the rest …
- REINDEER GAMES: DIRECTOR’S CUT – Not sure how many people out there are clamoring for a director’s cut to this Ben Affleck thriller but here you go.
TELEVISION
GAME OF THRONES: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON – Winter is coming … watch out for political backstabbers, a host of nasty cannibals, barbarian hordes and a little person with a load of schemes. HBO’s fabulous series based on the books of George R.R. Martin creates an entire mythical kingdom where nobles fight internally for power while all the while being hunted from two fronts – the Dothraki, a savage nomadic tribe rich in numbers and the mysterious creatures/men that lurk over the wall that are as much a myth as they are a terror. In true HBO style the series is a mix of uber violence with plenty of nudity but the scheming and plot twists make for great TV. A must have for anyone that loves genre.
TRANSFORMERS PRIME: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON – The modern classic comes home for the first time on Blu-ray in more than 10 hours of action along with a collectible set that includes a 96-page graphic novel. This is a new chapter on the classic series that has all of the fan favorites returning to action in order to face off against a more-powerful Megatron. The same writers that did the feature films TRANSFORMERS and TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE FO THE FALLEN (and who happen to also pen LOST) are on board for the ride.
SPORTS
SUPER BOWL XLVI CHAMPIONS: NEW YORK GIANTS – NFL Films brings the story of the latest champions in the NFL, the New York Giants and their second come-from-behind victory against the New England Patriots. The story follows the up and down season of the Giants where they began 6-2 before sliding to 7-7 only to win their last few games and make it into the playoffs. There, they had victories over the Falcons, Packers and 49ers to make it to the big game. The DVD includes the Super Bowl media day, post game ceremonies, a look at the wide receivers of the Giants and more.
