The second season of THE WALKING DEAD started off slow, maybe a bit too slow for its own good as the survivors of the zombie apocalypse found themselves finding safe haven on the farm owned by Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson).
However, as the season progresses, the farm isn’t as safe as once thought and it results in a kick-ass second half where many of the groups own find themselves at moral crossroads (or zombie food) in the process.
At the center of the story is Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) a former Sheriff who tries to instill some law and order to the group of people (including his wife and son) that he’s swore to protect. At the opposite end is Shane (Jon Bernthal), his best friend who is ankling to take away Rick’s Alpha Dog status (whether it’s right or wrong).
Their opposition is the crux of Season 2 and culminates with some pretty dark storytelling.
The fact that THE WALKING DEAD is a show willing to kill off major characters, is a coup – because that means no one on the series is safe. It also ratchets up the suspense.
At the end of Season 2, the series hints at where the series is headed for Season 3 (airing in November), which is the long-awaited comic book storyline of the Prison. Can’t wait!
The Bonus Features are jam-packed. There’s featurettes on the music, the gore, the sound effects and cast features. There are also six webisodes included which expand on the zombie mythology. Audio commentaries are also part of five of the thirteen episodes and there’s a ton of deleted scenes as well.
This set is the complete package and a treat for die-hard fans of the series and those that want to get caught up before Season 2 begins in October.
With THE WALKING DEAD and AMERICAN HORROR STORY dominating cable horror, it’s giving the theatrical horror market a run for its money for the first time in history. And frankly, it’s about time horror was taken seriously on TV. The ratings prove audiences want their gore with their story, now it’s time for the networks to step up to the plate and grow this audience even further.
