One of the more ambitious pilots ABC had in consideration this season was GOTHAM – a story of a female detective investigating an improbable murder that leads her to realize New York has a secret, magical underworld that the rest of the world doesn’t know about.
While speaking to the press at the 2012 ABC Summer Press Tour, ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee spoke about the decision to not pick up the Michael Green created series for the fall schedule.
“Michael Green is one of my favorite writers,” says Lee. “He’s really an amazing writer and we had a very, very strong development this season. The future will tell whether that plays out. We were super excited by some of the show that we had and I hope you enjoy NASHVILLE and 666 PARK AVENUE. So it’s a very high bar to meet and we had less needs this year than we did last year. I would think there were something like seven new shows that we brought out. In the end, it didn’t quite make it. I can tell you Michael is one of the great showrunners in this town, and you will see him back and you will see him making great shows. I love the title of GOTHAM, by the way.”
