At today’s Summer 2012 TCA The CW Press Tour, ARROW executive producer Marc Guggenheim spoke about reinventing the Green Arrow mythos for the new CW series based on the DC Comics in addition to why SMALLVILLE star Justin Hartley wasn’t asked to reprise his role as Oliver Queen for the new series (which went to
“This is such a different take and look at the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN reboot just five years after the last SPIDER-MAN movie,” says Guggenheim. “We wanted to chart our own course and our own destiny. Justin is a terrific Arrow and [ARROW executive producer] Andrew [Kreisberg] says it correctly. Michael Keaton doesn’t affect your love for Christian Bale [as Batman] and Christian Bale doesn’t affect your love to Adam West.”
As for a template, Guggenheim, who has written the GREEN ARROW comics, says they are taking elements from GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS and GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE for inspiration.
“We’ve lso taken a fair number of liberties with the characters,” adds Guggenheim. “In the comics both of his parents are dead, but in the series we keep his mother alive. On the series he has a sister, in the comic he doesn’t.”
The reason for this creative license according to Guggenheim is the Green Arrow origins aren’t as familiar cannon to fans as those of Batman and Superman.
“Everyone knows Batman’s parents died of Superman is from Krypton,” says Guggenheim. “Green Arrow has many different origins and doesn’t have as much canon, so we can playa round, but we always start with the comic as a source of inspiration.”
