As the SPARTACUS franchise on Staraz comes to its final season with SPARTACUS: WAR OF THE DAMNED, both star Liam McIntyre and executive producer/creator Steven S. DeKnight spoke to the press about the new season at Comic-Con 2012.
As Spartacus leads an army into war, DeKnight is particularly excited about more deaths coming our way.
“Yes, there are some deaths in the coming season that I have been thinking about for quite awhile,” he admits without naming names. “I can’t even hint at what it is, but it occurs later this season. I will say, we wanted to explore the gray area of morality.”
For McIntyre, he says his relationship Crixus (Manu Bennett) continues to evolve throughout WAR OF THE DAMNED.
“They’ve been fighting legions of Romans, so you’ll find everyone in a slightly different place,” explains McIntyre. “Spartacus is in Commander mode and he doesn’t take s*** from no one. He’s kind of the business now, which is fun. Last year he was searching for a way into that leadership of who he really is and this war they’re on. With all the Generals, each one has a different dynamic with the other and it keeps shifting sands. When we open this season, we’re doing well, things are going well, but something always happens. If you read Wikipedia, things don’t turn out the way you want them to, particularly for my character.”
As for finding love, McIntyre says that isn’t in the cards for Spartacus.
“It’s almost that manly thing of shutting love out, because you can’t let it in,” says McIntyre. “The history is everyone he touches ends up dead. Now he has a bigger cause. He can’t distract himself with love anymore. He has to be cruel to be kind, so he can win the war. That’s the job he has. That’s difficult to be the guy who doesn’t feel, because by nature he’s a good human being and that’s why he’s on this journey. That’s what I’ve loved playing – how a man tries to shut himself down in order to become a leader.”
