Original Telecast: May 1st, 2012
There was a big surprise moment tonight on DANCING WITH THE STARS when Jaleel White & partner Kym Johnson got ousted over lesser scoring couple Melissa Gilbert & Maksim Chmerkovskiy. It was even more jarring to see Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower go head to head with White & Johnson in the Rumba dance duel and WIN. It’s all subjective, isn’t it? It had nothing to do with the fact that White made an off-color joke about Len Goodman right before they squared off…right? Hmmmm.
Llong before the Rumba dance off we saw Maria Menounos & Derek Hough get the honor of encore for the night. No shocker there, Menounos received a perfect score, which pretty much entitled her to the encore. First safe, though, were William Levy & Cheryl Burke. Then came Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd. And finally, Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas were told the good news.
The A T & T Spotlight Performance couldn’t have been more touching. Steelo Vasquez, a young, hip dancer who was suddenly stricken with a brain aneurysm nearly died. Through rehabilitation and his strong drive, Vasquez recovered and actually performed live on DWTS tonight. He clearly has a greater appreciation of life now as we saw his eyes well up with tears after his heartfelt performance.
Season 14 castoff Gavin DeGraw came back not to dance but to do what he does best…sing. It was very sweet to watch his former partner Karina Smirnoff & Louie Van Amstel dance while he sang. Very nice touch.
A new segment on the show entitled the Ballroom Battle pitted six pros who trained couples to face off with one another. Off camera, Lacey Schwimmer’s couple took on Tony Dovolani’s couple and lost. Mark Ballas’ couple took on Louie Van Amstel’s couple and also lost. And Cheryl Burke’s couple defeated Karina Smirnoff’s duo. Then, tonight the three remaining couples did a Jive relay while their pro trainers Burke, Van Amstel and Dovolani looked on. Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli picked the winner. Burke’s couple rose to the occasion and swept the judges off their feet.
Soon Menounos & Hough finally got the news we all knew they would get…they’re safe. Then in the shocker moment of the night Gilbert & Chmerkovskiy received the very same news. This left White & Johnson to go up against Fegan & Hightower in the Rumba dance duel.
In the end, Fegan & Hightower were the victors and White & Johnson were sent home. Six left…stay tuned!
