One of the strangest and comedically satisfying series on network television is NBC’s COMMUNITY.  Set at the fictional Greendale Community College, the series focuses on a study group of misfits who find themselves in very strange situations every episode.

It’s a show aware of its weirdness and strangeness, but there’s also a sweet core to it as well.

Gillian Jacobs plays Britta Perry, the high-strung know-it-all and supposed independent thinker who is a much more brittle than she realizes. In fact, last week, it was revealed that she’s a secret homemaker – and comes from a “long line of wives and mothers.”

“She’s very ashamed of that history,” reveals Jacobs. “It’s so great to  see a woman in conflict with herself.”

It’s the kind of humor that COMMUNITY has strived for throughout its three seasons, and with a huge ratings bump after last week’s return after a three month hiatus, the series may indeed secure a fourth season even if it looked like NBC had put a target on its back when they benched the show temporarily.

Some of the cast of COMMUNITY were at Wondercon 2012 – for a panel and to speak with the press. This is what Jacobs had to say while doing her press rounds.

On the latest revelation that she has a secret homemaker bubbling inside of her …
“It makes total sense – ‘how did Britta end up who she is,’” says Jacobs. “At some point it’s ‘who hurt you?’ Maybe no one hurt her. She doesn’t like the face that she came from a normal household. I always like when you get to peel back the onion and learn a little piece of the character history.”

On the show’s quirky sense of humor and storytelling …
COMMUNITY is where high concept and character meet,” says Jacobs. “If you don’t like the characters or care about them, you wouldn’t get excited for the high concept. Our show is unique in the landscape of TV.”

On this being a dark season …
“Dan has already said this is going to be a dark season – and we’re a very meta show,” says Jacobs. “It’s a funny show, even when we have really horrible things happen like Jeff killing Pierce’s father or the HEART OF DARKNESS episode making that commercial.”

On the fans supporting the show when it was on hiatus …
“The flash mobs were so positive,” says Jacobs. “It’s so surreal and pretty amazing. We really wish we could have gone when the [flash mob] was in L.A., but we were shooting. [The fans] are really organized and are tweeting advertisers. There is a level of thought and organization. They’re like, ‘we saw what happened to FIREFLY and we will not let that happen to COMMUNITY. So they’re very organized, proactive and make themselves heard.”

On shooting the RASHOMON-esque “Remedial Chaos Theory” where a different role of the dice in a board game creates an alternate time line …
“We felt like we were losing our minds,” says Jacobs. “We had to do the same four lines seven times for each different scene. When Jeff hits his head on the ceiling fan, you had to pause, replace it with the foam one and do it again. It was just a long amount of time you had to do it over and over again we lost track. It took so long to finish it. We were still shooting insert shots [after the episode wrapped]. It only took place in Troy and Abed’s apartment, but that one broke us.”

On the Season 3 finale …
“We have a very epic season finale,” Jacobs teases. “I went back to do ADR and re-record dialogue and [the sets] were pitch black and silent. It was so strange.”

On whether she’s confident there will be a Season 4 …
“The fans demand it, Wondercon demands a fourth season will happen,” says Jacobs, who adds with a bit of cautious optimism. “I hope so. I really do.”
