While AMERICA’S GOT TALENT has proven to be a perennial summer favorite on NBC in the summer, the ratings have not been as strong as they have been in summer’s past and at today’s NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour, this decline was discussed.
“The show is still number one and likely to end the summer as the number one show this summer,” says Paul Telegdy, NBC Entertainment President of Alternative and Late Night Programming. “I think that we debate frequently the ratings of all our shows and as we discuss AGT this summer, we look at what we’ve asked of the show. We started it in the season where it premiered against very high-rated finales of some of people’s favorite shows. And because it’s an unusual year because of the Olympics, we had to start early. And then we step down for two and a half weeks, and then we come back. So given the television landscape, you know, secular declines in broadcasting, we’re thrilled, actually, with the performance of the show.”
As for Howard Stern, Telegdy has been pleased with his addition to the judges panel even though he signed up for a one-year contract on the show.
“What I’d like to say is that creatively we’re thrilled with Howard on the show and he’s proven himself to be a wonderful addition to the panel of judges on that show,” says Telegdy. “And we’d be delighted if Howard wants to come back.”
Later in the day, AGT judge Sharon Osbourne tweeted she may not be returning to the series by saying: “My darling @HowardStern, money Is not the reason I’m not returning to @nbcagt, it’s because …”
Although Osbourne was vague and didn’t finish her thought, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt added his feedback to those recent developments.
“I think it’s coming out of context and spontaneously,” he says. “I don’t know what’s going on. It’s much ado about nothing at the moment.”
