With COMMUNITY  getting new showrunners, only a 13-episode commitment and a new timeslot on Fridays, the question remains – how committed is NBC to the ground-breaking and highly original series?

At today’s NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt discussed the COMMUNITY situation and what’s happening with NBC’s comedy slate in general

“I think we’re going to transition with our comedy programming trying to broaden the audience and broaden what the network does,” says Greenblatt. “Those Thursday comedies [30 ROCK, PARKS AND RECREATION, THE OFFICE), which the critics love and we love, tend to be a bit more narrow than we’d ultimately like as we go forward. And so COMMUNITY is a show that has always been on the bubble and we decided to bring it back again and see what a fourth season will do for us. The reason that we did 13 episodes of that, and a couple of other shows is we really wanted to get more comedies on the schedule and we picked up a number of new comedies for the Fall and mid-season, and we just sort of laid out the number of episodes we would need of things in order to get new shows on. So I thought, let’s do a shorter season of these shows, which isn’t to say we couldn’t decide at some point to extend those seasons [and make them] longer.”

With creator Dan Harmon gone from the show, Greenblatt says he’s confident fans will like what the new showrunners have in store for the series.

“I think the fans of COMMUNITY are going to get the same show that they have loved from the beginning,” says Greenblatt. “Every so often, it’s time to make a change with a showrunner, and you sort of evaluate the creative and how the show is run and how the writing staff works. Sometimes you want to freshen the show and we just decided that it was time to do that on COMMUNITY – and no disrespect to anyone.”

And what about rumors this may be the last season of COMMUNITY?

“I would categorically not rule out that it’s not the last season of COMMUNITY,” says Greenblatt. “I would love nothing more than COMMUNITY to have a following on Friday and to be able to continue it.”
