After spending eight seasons on THE OFFICE as a writer, producer and performer, Mindy Kaling is now headlining a new Fox comedy that she created and stars in called THE MINDY PROJECT.
In the series, she plays an OB/GYN who discovers that love is not the way it’s portrayed in romantic movies. In many ways, she feels her character on the show is very similar to Michael Scott (Steve Carell) from THE OFFICE.
The fun thing about this character, not unlike Michael Scott in some ways, is she wants to be a better person,” says Kaling, while talking about the series at Fox’s Summer 2012 TCAs. “She’s a great doctor, hyper educated, wants to be a better catch and be a better friend and wants to read books instead of magazines. She tries to be a little more intellectual and super related – that’s the ‘project’.”
Getting the chance to headline her own show is a dream come true for Kaling as well who notes, “I wake up every day [thinking] ‘I’m the star of my own show with my name on it and working with actors I love. I’m going to turn into a monster [laughs].”
THE MINDY PROJECT debuts Tuesday, September 25 on Fox
