Watching the latest episode of GLEE, you couldn’t help but feel like the show was out of ideas and episode titles. Paying homage to one of the best selling soundtracks of all time – SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER – the episode is dubbed “Saturday Night Glee-ver” because, well, no one could have come up with a better title?
Really, “Glee-ver?”
Unlike last year’s solid episode focusing solely on the Fleetwood Mac album RUMOURS, this year’s tribute is good or bad pending on how you feel about Disco.
Well, most of the characters in New Directions think Disco still sucks, but that doesn’t stop Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) and Sue (Jane Lynch) from shoving disco down their students throats.
The end result – Disco songs and if you hate it, like I do, it’s a very painful episode.
When there are theme episodes, songs seem to take over and it does here – so we’re greeted to more musical numbers than should be allowed in an hour-long episode.
Storywise, Finn (Cory Monteith), Santana (Naya Rivera) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) all discover who they want to be and how they’re going to achieve it during the episode. There’s also another GLEE PROJECT finalist (Alex Newell in a great performance) who gets a special episode showcase, another Blaine (Darren Criss) spotlight song and a bunch of 1970s era dancing.
What’s very strange is how absent Quinn (Dianna Agron) is from this episode. She is confined to wheelchair, yet she’s only glimpsed for a few seconds in the entire episode. I don’t even think she has a line.
Way to marginalize an already marginalized character. Even Artie (Kevin McHale) got to disco-out on the dance floor in his wheelchair – why not Quinn. Are the writers still punishing Quinn?
Other than a brief detour to Vocal Adrenaline, “Saturday Night Glee-ver” is a total bust. That’s the dangers of messing with the dark side of music. Disco died for a reason, and now matter what GLEE does, it isn’t coming back.
