The last two episodes of SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE have moved kind of slowly. Yes, there has been plenty of violence and sex, but without a main storyline of action to move them; it just becomes an explicitly painted canvas to look at. Now with “The Greater Good” the storyline jumps into overdrive and ends with what could easily be classified as a cliffhanger. The season gets more and more interesting the further in we go, and the ways that the writers have the two separate plots intertwine and break apart is engaging.
The return of Ashur (Nick Tarabay) is good and bad. I had forgotten how much I absolutely loathe that character. Ashur is such a slimy piece of filth, and I can only hope that he gets his just rewards by the end of this season. To discover that he is the reason that Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) survived only lends more credence to my theory that all of her ‘divine guidance’ is pretty much an act to further her own means and revenge. She has been scripting everything with the help of Ashur, and I wonder who will be left standing when the ‘wrath of the gods’ descends on the hierarchy of Capua.
Doctore (Peter Mensah) spends most of the episode chained up and beat and whipped. I feel badly for him, that his own dehydration and physical torment led to him revealing the plans of Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) and Crixus (Manu Bennett). I’m sure on down the line that Doctore will have ample opportunity to restore himself in the eyes of the men he once trained, and now his loyalties to the House of Batiatus should be severed since he has learned the truth about Gannicus (Dustin Clare) and his wife. I’m hoping that the loyalty he felt died when Ashur told him how his wife was made to be a whore for the amusement of the house.
So we have a new Naevia (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) just in time to have Spartacus and Crixus make a somewhat ill-fated attempt to free her from a Roman mine. It’s great that she is still alive, bue the cost of her freedom being the capture of Crixus is not a happy thing. Here’s hoping Crixus makes it out alive this season. There are always casualties in war, but I’ve grown to love Crixus as a character over the last couple of seasons, and would be sad if he were to be killed off.
Speaking of love, it’s nice to see a budding romance between Nasir (Pana Hema Taylor) and Agron (Daniel Feuerriegel). It’s been awhile since we’ve had a same-sex couple on the show, and these two are certainly not hard to look at. Here’s hoping for some nice tender moments and hardcore *ahem* intimacy.
This episode did end with a cliffhanger, so it’ll be interesting to see how things heat up even more next week on SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE as Claudius Glaber (Craig Parker) gets a hold of men close to Spartacus and inches that much closer to taking him prisoner.
