With the latest episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, “The Five”, we’ve entered the dangerous territory of too much mythology layered in upon itself. This is a trap that a lot of genre television falls into where the writers have painted themselves into a corner and need to create new mythology to get them out of it and move forward. It kind of reminds me of the moment in THE X-FILES, I think it was season five, when Veronica Cartwright was given the unenviable task of spelling out the entire five year alien conspiracy arc in one monologue. I remember laughing at how ridiculous it sounded saying everything tied together and out loud, and then realizing that mythology of the show had gotten out of control (and this is how I’m starting to feel with this show’s mythology).
So now with VAMPIRE DIARIES, we made Elena (Nina Dobrev) a vampire, thus rendering her slightly less vulnerable, less human, and especially less desirable to Klaus (Joseph Morgan) because he needs living doppelganger blood to make his hybrids. Of course, everyone knows once you become a vampire that’s it, there’s no going back. Bonnie (Kat Graham) couldn’t magic Elena back to human and she completed her transition, so end of story. Right? Nope! Now we have a whole new level on the mythos of the original vampires that a cult of vampire killers called “the five” were created thousands of years ago with the sole purpose to eradicating vampires from the Earth. Now the tattoos that each of the five have lead to one thing, a cure for vampirism. Guess what everyone wants for Elena now kids! She CAN be human again, which means Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) can go back to fighting over protection rights instead of blood sharing rights, and Klaus can have her blood supply back to make more hybrids. But is anything ever really THAT simple? I mean Elena can’t even feed like a normal vamp because of her doppelganger cursed blood, which is interesting that we didn’t hear anything like that about Katherine (Nina Dobrev), but I’m sure the writers hadn’t thought of that complication way back when.
Of course, Stefan lying to everybody to work with Klaus and get Elena’s humanity back is just going to bite him in the rear, once Elena find out, and Damon and Elena lying about Elena’s loss of control when feeding is going to circle around on them; so everyone is stuck in one big sexy lying circle of beautiful people.
I love that Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) had to have a new usage this season, since the “I see dead people” was last year’s arc, and now he’s the ONLY one that can see the invisible tattoo on the arms of the five. Such an odd thing for the writers to decide that he can do, but what they hey! It’s better than being Elena’s walking blood bank like poor human Matt (Zach Roerig); who also has crazy Rebekah (Claire Holt) stalking him and giving him apology gifts for almost killing him.
I think maybe at some point I need to write down all of the mythology on this show and see if it works together, because as we move forward you know there’s going to be even more to tangle things up for our favorite kids in Mystic Falls.
