Michaela Conlin has spent eight years on BONES, currently airing on Fox Monday nights at 8 PM, as artist/facial reconstruction specialist Angela Montenegro. Angela is now married to TJ Thyne’s character entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins and, as of Season 6, mother of little Michael Vincent Hodgins.

At a party thrown by Fox for the Television Critics Association, Conlin and her BONES colleagues are celebrating the official announcement of the series’ pickup for a ninth season. The actress takes time to talk about playing Angela.

ASSIGNMENT X: Congratulations on the Season 9 pickup. Did you have to think about, “Do I want to do this for one more season?” or did you think, “We have a ninth season, yay, great”?

MICHAELA CONLIN: We’re all so excited about Season 9. Yeah, it’s great.

AX: Have you ever personally had any trepidation about, “Are we coming back for next season?” I mean, obviously not this season, as Seasons 7 and 8 got picked up together …

CONLIN: No. I mean, maybe that’s naïve of me, but I feel like the show has such a great following and is at such a place in the series that no, I haven’t.

AX: So Angela has now been a mommy for two years, and she’s essentially an auntie to Booth [David Boreanaz] and Brennan’s [Emily Deschanel] little girl.

CONLIN: Yes, she certainly is. There are definitely a lot of babies on set to play with. It’s been really fun.

AX: How is it acting opposite a baby?

CONLIN: I actually enjoy it, because it makes you be present. I’m holding someone else’s child, so I want to make sure that I’m obviously careful and aware. As an actor, I’ve been enjoying it. [The babies playing Michael Vincent have] gotten older, so we have a different set of twins now, but they’re wonderful.

AX: You played Angela’s pregnancy without being actually pregnant, and then Emily Deschanel was pregnant in real life, which was written into the show. Seeing her play Brennan as pregnant, did that make you reflect on when you had been playing pregnant Angela?

CONLIN: Yes and no. I mean, obviously, because I haven’t had kids, there was an element of me speaking to my friends that have kids, but everyone’s view of pregnancy is different, I hear, and Emily is really unbelievable. It’s like she has not missed a beat. She’s such a hard worker and looking beautiful and it’s been great having her and the baby around.

AX: Do you have a favorite aspect of Angela – single, single with Hodgins, single and broken up with Hodgins, married, pregnant, mom?

CONLIN: I really enjoyed the years that Angela and Hodgins were kind of circling each other, but it was really fun to do those scenes. But this is a great new chapter.

AX: Is there anything you’d like to see happen on the show?

CONLIN: I’ve really been hoping that Hodgins’ family is going to be around, but there are some great scenes with Brennan and Angela, because they’re both moms, so there’s been some fun stuff that we’ve gotten to do together. It’s been great.

AX: And you had a big episode this season with the graffiti artist who encouraged Angela as an artist. What do you feel are some other big Angela episodes lately?

CONLIN: There’s an episode where Angela goes roller derby-ing, she goes undercover as a roller derby girl and that was really, really fun to do. There’s a big episode with Andrew Leeds as Pelant [a serial killer who invaded Angela and Hodgins’ home]. He’s really great, and that was fun, too.

AX: Was roller derby-style skating something you knew how to do already?

CONLIN: No. They trained me and I trained with actual Derby Dolls inL.A. and they were fantastic, really great.

AX: Have you done any projects outside of BONES?

CONLIN: I produced a movie called SPARROWS DANCE, which went to a bunch of film festivals, which is a great little movie, but I wasn’t in it, I was executive-producing it, which was really great.

AX: What’s SPARROWS DANCE about?

CONLIN: It’s about an agoraphobic woman who hasn’t left her apartment in several months and she falls in love with her plumber. It’s a really beautiful movie by a writer/director named Noah Buschel out ofNew York.

AX: Did executive-producing that give you any more insight into BONES, either for your acting or just general production?

CONLIN: Yes, in terms of how hard the producers work and how much work there is to do.

AX: What do you hope people are get out of watching BONES at this point?

CONLIN: Well, I think our fan base knows what to expect and what they’re getting, and I think they’re really invested in the characters, so it’s just seeing more layers of the characters at this point and seeing where it goes.

AX: Is there anything else you’d like to say about BONES?

CONLIN: Keep watching.
