Your time is short. We know this. So in order to expedite your buying and Netflix decision making, we provide you with a list of the cool and not-so-cool titles coming out for movies, television and everything in-between. So put your feet up, grab some popcorn and check out this week’s selections.
Movies:
MAMA – A pretty good but pretty sad horror flick about two girls that get lost once their father goes off the deep end and takes them to a remote shack in the middle of nowhere after killing his wife. As he just about kills the girls (and presumably then himself) a dark creature attacks him. Fast forward a few years and the man’s brother is searching all parts of the forest where they were lost looking for his nieces. When they are found they are covered head to toe in dirt and more animal than anything else. Taken in by the uncle and his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain from ZERO DARK THIRTY), they try to establish a family but are continually hindered by the kids fear and following of something they refer to as “Mama.” We learn that this is actually a vengeful spirit that has roamed the Earth because of wrongs that were done to her.
MAMA is not your typical movie as you feel very much for the children but it isn’t scary either and the CG spirit isn’t that great in terms of special effects but it is more of the emotion of the kids (especially if you have a family) that will connect you. But scares are few and far between and so that drags it down as does some of the loooong times where nothing really happens of interest. Despite the bad CG, it always looks better in high def so check it out there.
SUPERMAN: UNBOUND – Another cool animated flick from Warner Bros. focuses on Superman having to put his personal life with Lois Lane as well as his training of Supergirl on hold when the thing responsible for the destruction of Krypton, Brainiac, comes to Earth with a mind to destroy the planet as well. The ever-improving android has been collecting pieces of cities from various planets – including Supergirl’s home city of Kandor – and wants to add Metropolis to his collection. Of course, that won’t sit well with Superman or Supergirl and the two must fight it out in order to protect what they value most. With some really good animation and a decent story this continues what has become a really good direct-to-video series and hopefully will continue in the future.
THE GREAT GATSBY: MIDNIGHT IN MANHATTAN – Just in time for the major movie release of the THE GREAT GATSBY starring Leonardo DiCaprio this is a documentary that focuses on F. Scott Fitzgerald and his life in writing the great novel as well as all the tribulations that he went through during the time of his writing the classic. The documentary looks at his relationship with Ernest Hemingway as well as his final days in Hollywood. It is an interesting documentary as it opens up the whole idea that the Jazz-age that is widely glamorized was not as exciting and great as reality. It also sheds some light onto Fitzgerald’s own build-up that he was a raging alcoholic. Some interesting stuff for those that are interested in the history of the man and the book.
New to Blu:
- SHANGHAI NOON COLLECTION – This 2-pack features both movies for the first time on Blu-ray. If you enjoyed this quasi-modern western this is a good pick up in high def.
- GAMER 3-D – This came out a few years back as a futuristic type game where a human controls an inmate in a series of live-action, fight-to-the-death. It’s back on Blu-ray and this time converted to 3-D for your pleasure.
Television:
PRIVATE PRACTICE: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON – The final season of PRIVATE PRACTICE is upon us on DVD and that means that your collection will be complete for this show, you could care less or you are waiting it out for the obligatory complete season – which may or may not be coming. The GREY’S ANATOMY spinoff didn’t end without some much needed drama as Addison (Kate Walsh) had to deal with some serious challenges as well as the rest of the crew that occupy the office. As with many of these TV dramas much of what we see is completely crazy and weird but given most doctor shows have their fair share it isn’t much of a surprise. But for fans, this is a proper send off and one that will leave people happy – if not wanting more of the show.
