The title of the SUPERNATURAL Season 13’s sixth episode “Tombstone” does refer to the traditional graveyard marker, but it also recalls not just the legendary Old West town, but the movie made about it (with Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday). No, nobody time-travels there, or even visits a modern incarnation. Instead, it’s a weird reflection of the newly sunny spirits of Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles).
Wait, Dean is actually happy? Well, sure, Castiel (Misha Collins) is back. Upon seeing Cass, Dean is immediately ready to accept the miracle. Sam (Jared Padalecki) is a little hesitant, until they all realize that Cass’s resurrection is likely due to the powers of Lucifer’s son Jack (Alexander Calvert). Jack’s abilities are such that before he was even born, he was aware of Castiel’s protective presence, confirmed by the recording left by Jack’s late mother. Jack (who has only been alive a little while) looks to Castiel as a father figure. Apparently by just wishing Castiel wasn’t dead, Jack woke him up in the Big Empty, which (as we saw two episodes back) annoyed the Entity running to Big Empty so much that It booted Cass back to Earth. Yay for Jack and yay for annoying the Entity.
So Dean is in a celebratory mood when they pick up a case involving a grave-robbing, murderous ghoul in Dodge City, Kansas. Sam is a little less joyous – this is probably going to turn out to be about Mom – but it doesn’t fully register on the others. Castiel and Jack are bonding in a big adoptive father/son way. Dean rents a room in a kitschy Western tourist trap hotel and lovingly recites the careers of the Old West characters whose photos adorn the walls.
The ghoul they’re chasing turns out to be using the body of Old West bank robber Dave Mather (Jonathan Cherry). Dean is thrilled at the prospect of shooting it out with one of his historic idols. Dave is involved with the local mortician (Sarah Troyer), who is ignorant of her boyfriend’s more unconventional aspects. Meanwhile, temporary sheriff Sarge (Eric Schweig, of LAST OF THE MOHICANS – cool casting!) teams up with our guys, wanting to blow away whoever killed his nephew.
When Dave robs the local bank, Dean gets his shootout. However, in an effort to zap Dave, Jack accidentally hits a bank guard with his mojo. The guard dies and Jack is sent into a horrible guilt spiral, sure he’s a monster after all.
Sarge and Dean rescue the mortician and kill Dave, who explodes in a more EVIL DEAD than human way. Sarge is not all that inclined to ask questions, though, and is easily persuaded to lay the guard’s death at Dave’s feet.
Jack is not easily persuaded of anything, though. Even lectures from Dean, who now accepts Jack as one of the crew, and from father figure Castiel about how they too have done terrible things doesn’t make Lucifer’s son feel any better. Jack apologizes and zaps himself out of the bunker to places unknown.
So, on the upside, Castiel is back, Dean is happy and the mantle of sulking is for once not borne by a Winchester. We don’t know what half-Lucifer, half-human sulking looks like, but we’re about to learn. The episodic parts of “Tombstone” are fun (as episodic parts generally are when any of our regulars get to geek out about something) and the arc seems to be cruising the SUPERNATURAL floodwaters smoothly.
