After fifteen seasons and 327 one-hour episodes, SUPERNATURAL has its series finale on The CW on Thursday, November 17, 2020. The series began on The WB, and is now the longest-lasting survivor of that now-gone network.
The CW Network president Mark Pedowitz counts himself as a SUPERNATURAL admirer. At a Q&A panel (pre-COVID) held by The CW for the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, there’s a final SUPERNATURAL panel. The speakers include leads Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester), Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester), Misha Collins (the angel Castiel) and Alexander Calvert (the half-angel Jack), executive producer/director Robert Singer, and executive producers/writers Andrew Dabb, Eugenie Ross-Leming, and Brad Buckner.
At the panel’s end, Pedowitz comes onto the stage to address both the audience and the panelists. “Thank you. Thank you for fifteen seasons. Of course, if you wish to reconsider, I know a network that will be willing to take you back.” This gets a warm laugh from everyone. “Thank you for outlasting one network, and almost outlasting two. But most of all, as a fan, you have created immense enjoyment in my personal life, having seen every one of the episodes. You have made my time and many of my people’s time at The CW a blessing. And I don’t mean that in a religious sense. I mean it in a sense of, you all were great to work with.”
Pedowitz continues, “Now, I get a little sad. Fifteen years is a remarkable achievement, one that can never be taken away from you, one that can never be taken away from The CW. You will always have a home here. You always have a personal fan in me. So thank you again.”
Padalecki, for one, has found a new CW home in the upcoming series WALKER, a reboot of WALKER, TEXAS RANGER, as both producer and star.
Pedowitz takes a little time for some follow-up questions. Since The CW seems like it would be happy to let SUPERNATURAL run much longer, and since it is certainly popular, why is the series ending now?
Pedowitz says, “All I can tell you is, Jared, Jensen, Peter Roth at Warner Brothers Studios, and myself had a very, very long, sad, heartbreaking discussion, and we all came to understand what the guys [Padalecki and Ackles] wanted to do. They wanted to go out still relevant. They wanted to be with their families. They wanted to see what else was out in the world. And you know what? As we always said, and I said this many times, when they were ready to stop, we’ll stop. So that’s why.”
As to how it will all end, Pedowitz concludes, “We’ve been pretty good at allowing our shows to find their own conclusion, that the audiences and the fans find satisfying.”
