CRIMETIME: FREEFALL premieres Friday, February 23, on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel. The telefilm stars Lyndie Greenwood as TV star Hadley, who decides to help resistant detective Shawn (Luke Macfarlane) solve a murder. The tone is distinctly light-hearted.
Greenwood spent four seasons as Jenny Mills, who investigated supernatural mysteries on SLEEPY HOLLOW. The Toronto native has also been a regular or recurred on NIKITA, STAR, S.W.A.T., THE EXPANSE and SHELVED.
SHELVED, Greenwood says, provided “one of my favorite roles ever. That was a workplace comedy series, and I realized doing that how much I absolutely adore comedy. And then this movie came up pretty much quickly right afterward, so I’m delighted to be able to work that muscle.”
Is delivering punchlines different than speaking regular dialogue? “A hundred percent. It’s all about timing, I had a little bit of practice on [SHELVED].”
Greenwood describes her CRIMETIME: FREEFALL character Hadley as “a fancy-pants L.A. actress who has been recently fired from a long-running show. So, she’s a lot, but she’s also very warm and genuinely curious about people, and a wonderful mother and a caring daughter.”
As for Hadley’s relationship with detective Shawn, “There is a lot of possibility in that, but we explore that lightly in this movie. So, it’s more about the tension and the way they sort of dig at each other, which I think is really fun. And really, I think the important relationship for Hadley, my character in this movie, are with her kids and her mom, and then there’s this potential with the detective.”
Is Greenwood a mystery fan herself? “I like mystery when it comes up in my life, but it’s never been my preferred genre. The mystery is a bonus, but what I love most about this movie is the comedy, and the beautiful family relationships between my character, her kids, and the mother as well. It’s a multi-generational family story.”
Hallmark and “murder” are generally not things one thinks of in the same sentence, so how is that handled in CRIMETIME: FREEFALL?
“It’s definitely a cozy murder mystery,” Greenwood explains. “There’s no gore, there’s no violence. You’re not going to see little flashbacks of the murder or anything like that. That’s not what we’re about. It’s about the people around that story, and how they interact with it, rather than the actual death itself.”
Is CRIMETIME: FREEFALL intended to be the first in a series of telefilms? “That’s the hope. They’re taking them one at a time. We’ll see what the reaction is.”
Did making the movie feel like a pilot, or like a standalone? “That’s a good question. Kind of both. It definitely leaves you wanting more of the story, like hopefully a pilot does, but it’s got this quality of a feature film. So, the best of both worlds.”
What’s up next for Greenwood? “I’m going to work on a show called GOOD GRIEF up in Canada.”
This is not, Greenwood adds, to be confused with Dan Levy’s recent telefilm of the same name.
“Actually, this one was around before. It’s a dear friend of mine who I met on a Hallmark movie [MAGIC IN MISTLETOE], Amy Trefry. They wrote this amazing series about a bereavement group and the community that is built around that, and I’m going to shoot that in Halifax pretty soon.”
And what would Greenwood most like people to know about CRIMETIME: FREEFALL?
“That it’s a really fun time, it’s a really funny script, and it manages to be authentically heartfelt as well. I think the family relationships with the mum and the kids are particularly wonderful to watch.”
This interview was conducted during Hallmark Channel’s luncheon for the Winter 2024 Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in Pasadena, California.
