Movie Review: HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS

HANSEL & GRETEL WITCH HUNTERS |(c) 2013 Paramount Pictures

Rating: R Stars: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Pihla Viitala,Thomas Mann, Peter Stormare Writers: Tommy Wirkola and D.W. Harper Director: Tommy Wirkola Distributor: Paramount Release Date: January 25, 2013 There are a lot of good ideas in HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, not the least of which was having Tommy Wirkola direct and co-write (with D.W. Harper). Wirkola’s previous film, the Norwegian-language Nazi zombie movie DEAD SNOW, displayed some of the antic spirit of Sam Raimi’s EVIL DEAD movies. The trouble is that some of the elements in HANSEL & GRETEL require a different sort of tone, and this […]Read On »

The building’s owners, Gavin (Terry O’Quinn) and Olivia (Vanessa Williams) Durant, seem to have more power than even wealth and political influence can convey. Interview: THE GIRL actor Toby Jones on playing Alfred Hitchcock

Toby Jones in THE GIRL | ©2012 HBO

In THE GIRL, which re-airs on HBO this week, Toby Jones plays filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. It’s not an especially flattering view of the director/producer, as it deals with his unwanted fascination with actress Tippi Hedren (played in THE GIRL by Sienna Miller), who starred in THE BIRDS and MARNIE for Hitchcock. The London-born Jones is almost always working. A few recent credits include TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, THE HUNGER GAMES and the voice of Dobby in HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PT. 1. Speaking briefly about THE GIRL, Jones says […]Read On »

Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet | ©2012 Marvel Comics

One of the great things about the Marvel movies that led up to the first AVENGERS film is how well they built a consistent universe with seeds planted all along the way leading up to the big epic battle for New York City and the world. The appearance of – SPOILERS! – Thanos during the closing credits suggests they know full well where they’re going next in AVENGERS 2 or 3, but let’s take a look at some past Avengers storylines in the comics that might make for good movie fodder. 1. The Infinity Gauntlet This one is probably a […]Read On »

Ultron | ©2012 Marvel Comics

We already know – SPOILERS! – Thanos is on the way in the next THE AVENGERS movie, but what other famous foes from Avengers stories of the past deserve a shot at big screen stardom? After all, heroes are only as good as the villains they face. We list a few here, but they’re only suggestions; and no, Count Nefaria is not on this list. Complain all you like in the comments about that glaring omission or the lack of Baron Zemo, but remember that this is just one list for our villainous THE AVENGERS 2 and 3 films; you […]Read On »

Movie Review: ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER movie poster | ©2012 20th Century Fox

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, Marton Csokas, Jimmi Simpson, Joseph Mawle, Robin McLeavy Writer: Seth Grahame-Smith, based on his novel Director: Timur Bekemambetov Distributor: 20th Century Fox Release Date: June 22, 2012 Normally, this reviewer is a believer in substance over style – what a movie is about, its story, its ideas, its emotional impact and its performances normally take precedence over what the film looks like. However, this is not true of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER. It’s probably possible, perhaps even easy, to find out what director Timur Bekmambetov and […]Read On »
