BLACK LIGHTNING is The CW’s latest series based on a D.C. Comics property. The new Tuesday-night drama shares an executive producer, Greg Berlanti, with the other D.C. adaptations, but BLACK LIGHTNING, developed for television by Berlanti’s fellow executive producers Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil, has two notable differences. All but one of the protagonists are African-American and most of the main characters are adults in early middle age. Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a beloved high school principal in the city of Freeland. In THE GIFTED, Fox Network’s Monday night series about superpowered mutants on the run from the authorities, Emma Dumont plays Lorna Dane, aka Polaris. Polaris is a famous figure in Marvel Comics (Marvel is a participant in the series), but when she started, Dumont wasn’t aware of the extent of Polaris’ metal-manipulating abilities. Matt Nix, who created and show-runs THE GIFTED, tells a story about Dumont during a Fox-sponsored Q&A session for the show. “In the pilot, there’s a scene where she’s moving cars around [at a distance, using her powers]. Black Bolt’s mostly human brother Maximus, played by Iwan Rheon, would like to see the situation improve for the non-powered – and things the best way to do that would be to take the throne.
