The X List: Five DOCTOR WHO Pirate Adventures

William Hartnell and George Cooper in DOCTOR WHO - Season 4 - "The Smugglers" | ©1966 BBC

Although “The Curse of the Black Spot” was only the second full-fledged period pirate tale featured in DOCTOR WHO, there have been  other televised adventures in which the TARDIS has landed in the middle of swashbuckling, sea- or space-faring scurvy dogs in full eye-patch and parrot-y regalia. Let’s take a look back at the other times the Doctor and companions shivered their timbers! (Note to the dedicated fans: I’ve automatically discounted Blackbeard’s brief appearance in “The Mind Robber” because it’s not a major part of the story, and we’re only doing actual TV WHO, not the novels, audios or what-have-you.) The X List: Five DOCTOR WHO Kids Joined with Alien Technology

Sydney Wade in DOCTOR WHO - Series 6 - Episode 1 | ©2011 BBC

One of the central mysteries introduced in the two-part opening story of DOCTOR WHO’s Series 6, “The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon,” concerns that little girl in the spacesuit. Who is she? Why did the Silence want her in that suit? And where did she get the power to regenerate like a Time Lord? While fandom ponders these questions, theorizing faster than the Doctor can twirl around the console and set coordinates for the TARDIS’ next destination, it occurred to us that the girl in the spacesuit joins a line of other children that have found themselves somehow joined with […]Read On »

Five Questions We Hope DOCTOR WHO Series 6 Will Answer

DOCTOR WHO - Season 6 final poster |©2011 BBC

We’re a day away from the eagerly awaited debut of DOCTOR WHO Series 6 (simultaneously on BBC and BBC America), but there are so many lingering questions from the convoluted and complex saga that ran through Series 5! So let’s recap what mysteries still linger and what aspects of show runner Steven Moffat’s sprawling story arc – some of which began as far back as the 2008 two-part tale, “Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead” – we hope get wrapped up or at least explained this year: 1. Who or What is the Silence? ‘Silence will fall’ according to […]Read On »

CD Review: DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 5 – Original Soundtrack

DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 5 soundtrack | ©2011 Silva Screen Records

Where some other hugely popular sci-fi series are basically stuck in time and space, DOCTOR WHO is blessed by its ability to jump all over the two in an English phone booth. That’s been a particular mitzvah to composer Murray Gold since he jumped aboard the TARDIS’ sassy reboot so many series ago. Now the CD hand strikes 5 with a two-disc compilation that continues to show off WHO scoring as the Gold standard when it comes to some of the most delightfully inventive TV scoring in any one’s universe, music that mostly packs a rambunctious sense of joy to […]Read On »

WonderCon 2011: Author Neil Gaiman chats about scripting DOCTOR WHO

DOCTOR WHO - Season 6 |©2011 BBC

Yes, famed SANDMAN author Neil Gaiman will be writing an episode of DOCTOR WHO this forthcoming season and at WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco we got the scoop during his chat with the press about the series. “My episode is the fourth episode of the season,” Gaiman says. “It was originally going to be episode 11 of the last season, but we moved it to this season so that there would be enough budget to make it properly.” While that disappointed Gaiman, it ended up working out for the best. “At the time it made me incredibly sad and now […]Read On »
