Everyone knows that the Emmys never nominate horror programming, which is why FX’s AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM is nominated for fifteen Emmys this year – uh, wait a minute. FX President John Landgraf takes some time during a break at the Television Critics Association press tour to discuss the Emmy love for his network’s show that has “horror” in its title. The AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM nominations include Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, Outstanding Actress (Jessica Lange, who won an Outstanding Supporting Actress Emmy last year for playing a different role in the series’ first season), Outstanding Supporting Actor (James Cromwell […]Read On »

We’re just past the half way point for the 38th annual Toronto International Film Festival and its time to take stock. Here’s the countdown… (or is that count up?) 0: Number of personal letters Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) kept from his affair with an underage girl in THE INVISIBLE WOMAN. 2: Number of big buzz films so far. GRAVITY, the 3-D space epic with Sandra Bollock and George Clooney and 12 YEARS A SLAVE starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt. 2: Number of endings there are for AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, the big screen adaptation of the gritty play […]Read On »

Season 6 of SONS OF ANARCHY, the motorcycle club/crime drama created by Kurt Sutter, comes roaring back onto FX this week. Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) is currently running SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Originals). He’s pleased that former SAMCRO chief Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), who is also Jax’s stepfather, is presently behind bars; unfortunately, Jax’s wife Tara (Maggie Siff) is also in jail. As for Jax’s mother Gemma Teller Morrow, played by Katey Sagal (who in real life is married to series creator Sutter), she at least begins the season in an uncommonly serene state of mind. While […]Read On »

For its first four seasons, THE LEAGUE, the half-hour comedy created by Jackie and Jeff Schaffer, was a staple for FX Network. Now FX is moving THE LEAGUE to its new outlet FXX for the show’s fifth season, which debuted Wednesday September 4 at 10:30 PM, following fellow FX transfer IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA, which is now on FXX Wednesdays at 10 PM. Asked about the move, Paul Scheer, who plays THE LEAGUE’s much-bullied Andre, quips, “I was just happy that FXX isn’t a p**n channel. For a little bit, I was confused we’d be there.” Scheer, a native […]Read On »

In the first-season finale of MISTRESSES, on ABC Monday September 9 at 9 PM, Rochelle Aytes’ character April Malloy must choose between her husband and her boyfriend, though that’s far from the only crisis facing her and the other three leading ladies, Alyssa Milano as Savi, Yunjin Kim as Karen and Jes Macallan as Joss. Native New Yorker Aytes was actually in another MISTRESSES project – a 2009 Lifetime movie that costarred Milano’s CHARMED colleague Holly Marie Combs – along with being a regular or frequently recurring character on DRIVE, THE FORGOTTEN, DETROIT 1-8-7 and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES; her feature credits […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Harry Lennix on MR. SOPHISTICATION and MAN OF STEEL – Part 1

Harry Lennix in MR. SOPHISTICATION | ©2013

Harry Lennix is a very prolific actor. In discussing all his new, recent and upcoming projects in a telephone interview, he jokes, “I’m in every movie ever made.” That’s a slight exaggeration, but the Chicago-born actor does have a lengthy resume that includes the two MATRIX sequels, the Oscar-winning RAY, the Shakespeare adaptation TITUS ANDRONICUS, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and this year’s MAN OF STEEL. Lennix is also one of the stars of NBC’s new espionage thriller series THE BLACKLIST, which premieres September 23. A film that’s especially close to Lennix’s heart is MR. SOPHISTICATION – as well as playing the […]Read On »

Most people know that THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is reportedly based on real events. Far fewer knew that the SILENT HILL films also had roots in history. The stories behind both of these films, along with THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES and POLTERGEIST, were explored in last year’s REAL FEAR: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MOVIES special, which aired on Chiller TV. Tonight, Friday September 6, Chiller TV is back with a follow-up, entitled REAL FEAR 2, or alternatively, REAL FEAR: THE TRUTH BEHIND MORE MOVIES. Larry Landsman, who executive-produced both two-hour specials, is on the phone to talk about the new edition. ASSIGNMENT X: […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Ken Marino pushes hard for BAD MILO

Ken Marino in BAD MILO | ©2013 Magnet

In the annals of ass-monster movies, BAD MILO comes across as a terrific rush – pardon the unavoidable metaphors. Not nearly the gross-out fiesta its premise of a dooty Dark Half might imply in its admittedly hilarious trailer, this production of director Jacob Vaughan (THE CASSIDY KIDS) and the usually sedate mumblecore directors / producers Jay and Mark Duplass (BAGHEAD), BAD MILO is far more of an update of tragic WOLFMAN mythos, as crossed with the satire of OFFICE SPACE, the reproductive angst of THIRTYSOMETHING and any number of post-EST self-help psychiatry sessions. Grimacing and screaming through it all in […]Read On »
