Interview: BRAVE composer Patrick Doyle bears the highlands

Patrick Doyle | ©2012 Patrick Doyle

If there’s one picture that Patrick Doyle was fated to be the composer of, then it’s no contest that movie is BRAVE, Pixar’s animated salute to all things Scottish in the form of a feisty lass named Merida. Like all modern, high-born Disney heroines, this red hair rebels against the chauvinist-conformist path set by her well-meaning royal parents, with her archery skills representing the sharply pointed spirit of her determination. Not only does Merida’s shooting skill outrage her highland clansmen and intended suitors, but her unbreakable will also ends up incurring a witch’s ursine curse- the rampaging results of which […]Read On »

Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet | ©2012 Marvel Comics

One of the great things about the Marvel movies that led up to the first AVENGERS film is how well they built a consistent universe with seeds planted all along the way leading up to the big epic battle for New York City and the world. The appearance of – SPOILERS! – Thanos during the closing credits suggests they know full well where they’re going next in AVENGERS 2 or 3, but let’s take a look at some past Avengers storylines in the comics that might make for good movie fodder. 1. The Infinity Gauntlet This one is probably a […]Read On »

The new season begins with Nate Ford (Hutton) and his team of former thieves (who help the helpless by taking down big targets by performing elaborate cons) have set up shop in Portland, OR (where the series is filmed). Interview: TED star Mila Kunis chats about her new comedy with Seth MacFarlane

Mila Kunis in TED | ©2012 Universal Pictures

Having an annoying roommate is one thing. Having that roommate that’s also your childhood teddy bear is a whole other thing — especially when it’s a living, breathing thing that likes the ladies and enjoys drugs. That’s the set-up for the new Seth MacFarlane comedy TED which features Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett who made a wish as a kid that has haunted him as an adult and Mila Kumis as Lori Collins, his somewhat understanding girlfriend. Doing TED was a no brainer for Kunis, since she currently voices the role of Meg Griffin on the Seth MacFarlane created FAMILY […]Read On »

TV Review: TRUE BLOOD – Season 5 – “Whatever I Am, You Made Me”

Rutina Wesley in TRUE BLOOD - Season 5 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me" | ©2012 HBO/John P. Johnson

Just in case we weren’t aware of the keen contributions normally made to TRUE BLOOD by Rutina Wesley’s blunt-spoken Tara and Kristin Bauer van Straten’s brilliantly acerbic Pam, the episode “Whatever I Am, You Made Me” drives the point home by muffling both characters. Make no mistake, Tara and Pam are both front and center here, it’s just that they’re both in dead serious mode. Newly-vamped Tara, having fled from her cousin Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and Sookie (Anna Paquin), almost kills a helpless woman changing a tire. Tara gets some self-control and takes shelter with old boss/boyfriend/shapeshifter Sam (Sam Trammell). […]Read On »
