In the new romantic dramedy LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (which opened nationwide this week), Anne Hathaway plays a young woman with Parkinson’s who strikes up an awkward new relationship with a drug salesman played by Jake Gyllenhaal. She’s initially cautious about putting her feelings out there, particularly with her disease, but the end result is a film that redefines the romantic comedy genre. And with director and co-writer Ed Zwick pushing the boundaries of nudity between the two leads in a film, it certainly gives Hathaway a bunch of things to talk about as she takes five with ASSIGNMENT X. AXclusive: TANGLED Animation Supervisor John Kahrs brings life to Rapunzel

For a film based on the classic Brothers Grimm story RAPUNZEL, the end result of TANGLED (opening today) is anything but grim. Bright, cheerful and full of bright-eyed expressive characters, the Disney film’s animation supervisor John Kahrs brought a whole new look and layer to the classic Disney princess genre. More RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK than THE LITTLE MERMAID, the film is filled with two strong leads (Rapunzel and her swashbuckling love interest Flynn Rider) and two great sidekicks (a chameleon named Pascal and a blood-hound horse named Maximus). In an exclusive interview with ASSIGNMENT X, Kahrs spoke about […]Read On »

Movie Review: TANGLED

For those jonesing for an animated Disney fairytale in the traditional style, or just a fun film that can be shared with the kids, TANGLED fills the bill. Quick, to the point and entirely enjoyable, TANGLED takes the traditional Grimm story, gives it some action and the title princess some gumption and takes off in beautiful style, looking much like the old enchanted films of yore, with 3D that brings up a couple of moving moments and is otherwise unobtrusive.

We were all horrified yesterday when Warner Bros. announced they were going to do a big-screen reboot of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Being major fans of the Joss Whedon-created TV series, and with him having no involvement in the project, it’s clear there’s more nightmare announcements ahead that will send us fans screaming under the bed until this horrible nightmare is over. Did we mention the script is being written by newbie screenwriter Whit Anderson – she used to be an actress! However, there are a few things to be grateful for. First of all, considering Warner Bros. is involved […]Read On »

When Walt Disney was just getting his feature animated division rolling in the 1940s, he was struggling with a way to bring the story of Rapunzel to the big screen. Now, seven decades later, the 50th animated film from the company has finally cracked that story. TANGLED is the end result (opening tomorrow), a delightfully funny and endearing tale of the golden haired Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) who sets out on an adventure with roguish thief Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi) to find out who she really is. Mark Kennedy, who served as TANGLED’s head of story, spoke […]Read On »

Profile: CHUCK star Zachary Levi gets TANGLED up in Disney’s latest animated feature

Zachary Levi may play a nerdy super spy on TV’s CHUCK, but this Wednesday he’s moonlighting as the roguish animated character Flynn Rider in Disney’s Rapunzel retelling TANGLED (which opens nationwide on Wednesday). It’s the kind of double duty the actor relishes – especially since both parts are so different. In TANGLED, Levi plays thief who befriends the long-haired Rapunzel and the two go on an epic adventure together. On CHUCK, which is now in its fourth season on NBC, Levi is the show’s title character who was co-opted by the CIA because he accidentally downloaded a program into his […]Read On »

From the Halls of the 2010 AMERICAN FILM MARKET

AFM logo

The week-long AMERICAN FILM MARKET just completed its 2010 edition (it ran at the Santa Monica Lowes Hotel from November 3 to November 10) as distributors met with domestic and foreign buyers to buy, sell and pre-sell a whole assortment of action, horror, comedies and dramas. The quality of the products always varies, but the market is a great barometer of what trends in independent filmmaking are waning and rising. ASSIGNMENT X checked out the halls for a couple of days to get the scoop this year, and here’s what some people had to say about the state of the […]Read On »

Interview: ‘THE BIG C’ Actor OLIVER PLATT talks TV, Red Sox and ‘2012’

© 2010 Showtime | Oliver Platt in THE BIG C - Season One

In Showtime’s new dramedy THE BIG C (which just wrapped up its first season this week), erstwhile suburban housewife Cathy Jamison, played by Laura Linney, turns her life upside-down when she is given a diagnosis of terminal cancer. She doesn’t immediately tell her husband Paul, who is bewildered by Cathy’s sudden (to him) change in behavior. Platt, who played White House Counsel Oliver Babish on THE WEST WING from 2001-2005, with a massive resume of starring and costarring roles in film, TV and stage, took some time to talk about playing Paul and a few other noteworthy recent gigs. AX: […]Read On »
