HELL ON WHEELS steams to the conclusion of its second season tonight in a two-hour finale beginning at 9 PM on AMC. The series concerns the post-Civil War construction of the first U.S. transcontinental railroad and the work camp called Hell on Wheels, where Confederate veteran Cullen Bohannon, played by Anson Mount, has come seeking vengeance against the men who killed his wife. Executive producer/show runner John Shiban (whose other credits include THE X-FILES, THE LONE GUNMEN, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, SUPERNATURAL, TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY and BREAKING BAD) is due to speak to a whole group of people about HELL ON […]Read On »

TV Review: HELL ON WHEELS – Season 2 – “The White Spirit”

Stars: Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common, Dominique McElligott, Tom Noonan, Christopher Heyerdahl Writer:  Jami O’Brien & Bruce Marshall Romans    Director: David Von Ancken        Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: September 23, 2012 Last week I ranted about the shiftiness of the Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) and his many plans and machinations for the people of HELL ON WHEELS. This time in “The White Spirit” he goes even further over the line, and I shudder to think what ramifications there are for all of his actions in this episode. Of course this episode does make a few things clear […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: HELL ON WHEELS star Christopher Heyerdahl talks The Swede

HELL ON WHEELS is both the title and the setting of AMC’s drama, Sunday nights at 9 PM, about the muddy post-Civil War settlement where the first U.S. transcontinental railroad is being built in 1865. The place is full of crime, murder and desperate characters. One of the hardest-luck cases in this hard-luck environment is Christopher Heyerdahl’s character Thor Gunderson, known to all as “the Swede,” even though he’s really Norwegian. In Season 1, the Swede was head of security in the encampment, but in Season 2, he’s been demoted to collecting the bodies of the dead. Heyerdahl hails from British […]Read On »

TV Review: HELL ON WHEELS – Season 2 – “Purged Away with Blood”

Stars: Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common, Dominique McElligott, Tom Noonan, Christopher Heyerdahl Writer:  Tony Gayton & Thomas Brady  Director: Joe Gayton       Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: September 16, 2012 HELL ON WHEELS is a tough show to watch sometimes. Not because of bad writing or anything negative, but because the subject matter is so visceral and harsh that it takes a bit to sit and watch it through to the terminus point. A perfect example of that for me is last episode when they were digging the bullet out of Durant (Colm Meaney). I’m weird. I can handle […]Read On »

Do you love THE WALKING DEAD? Would you kill (not literally, we’re not inciting illegal acts here) to go to the Season 3 premiere and see the episode on a big screen in the company of the show’s makers and stars? WALKING DEAD executive producer Gale Anne Hurd would like to make that happen for you, so she has come up with a contest, happening right now on Twitter. The winner will be flown from anywhere in the U.S. and put up at a hotel for two nights in order to attend the Los Angeles premiere of Season 3 of […]Read On »

TV Review: HELL ON WHEELS – Season 2 – “The Railroad Job”

Stars: Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common, Dominique McElligott, Tom Noonan, Christopher Heyerdahl Writer:  Mark Richard  Director: Michael Nankin      Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: September 9, 2012 Wow is “The Railroad Job” one of the biggest shoot ‘em up, bang ‘em up episodes of HELL ON WHEELS yet? All of Bohannan’s (Anson Mount) sins from the first episodes of this season definitely have come home to roost, and now it’s a question of who gets out alive when a town robbery gets botched. This is one of those ‘crisis’ episodes of a series, where writers get to define who […]Read On »

TV Review: HELL ON WHEELS – Season 2 – “Scabs”

Stars: Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common, Dominique McElligott, Tom Noonan, Christopher Heyerdahl Writer:  Chris Mundi Director: Catherine Hardwicke     Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: September 2, 2012 HELL ON WHEELS has some surprising character study in the latest episode, “Scabs”. There’s a lot going on that with certain characters that I was honestly amazed by, simply because of who the characters have been up to this point in the first and now second seasons of the show. So the big stink of this episode is that the Sioux are threatening the continued building of the railroad as it is […]Read On »

TV Review: HELL ON WHEELS – Season 2 – “Slaughterhouse”

Anson Mount in HELL ON WHEELS - Season 2 - "Slaughterhouse" | ©2012 AMC/Chris Large

Stars: Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common, Dominique McElligott, Tom Noonan, Christopher Heyerdahl Writer:  Jami O’Brien & Bruce Marshall Romans   Director: Sergio Mimica-Gezzan    Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: August 26, 2012 So I’ve compared HELL ON WHEELS to DEADWOOD in the past, as have many people. The two series are very tonally similar and they both take place in rugged, rustic western settings. So, it was only a matter of time until someone gets fed to pigs on this show. It seems like a natural thing. In DEADWOOD, Woo’s pigs were a constant place for body disposal, so it’s […]Read On »

Stars:  Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn Writer: Moira Walley-Beckett Director: Michelle MacLaren Network: AMC, airs Sunday Nights Original Telecast: September 2, 2012 “Gliding Over All” wraps up the first half of Season 5 of BREAKING BAD, and sends us into the (suddenly all too long) break between the Season’s first and second halves asking questions we thought we’d reasonably be asking at this point anyway.  In the past 8 episodes Walter White (Bryan Cranston) has successfully risen to the top of criminal underworld in the Southwest, become a ruthless killer, and eliminated or neutralized anyone who could stop him […]Read On »

TV Review: BREAKING BAD – Season 5 – “Say My Name”

Mike (Jonathan Banks) dumps his weapons in BREAKING BAD "Say My Name" | (c) 2012 Ursula Coyote/AMC

Stars:  Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn Writer: Thomas Schnauz Director: Thomas Schnauz Network: AMC, airs Sunday Nights Original Telecast: August 26, 2012 “Say My Name” is a pivotal and gut-wrenching episode of BREAKING BAD, and one that answers many of the questions that have been building since the season began.  Questions such as: Is Walt really capable of becoming “Jesse James?” In Mike’s (Jonathan Bank’s) memorable turn of phrase, just because Walt shot Jesse James doesn’t make him Jesse James.  But the opening sequence of “Say My Name” says otherwise.  Walt, Jesse, (Aaron Paul) and Mike meet the crime […]Read On »
