Interview: Composer Frank Ilfman is not afraid of the BIG BAD WOLVES

BIG BAD WOLVES | ©2014 Magnolia

One could say that the world first became aware of the Israeli film BIG BAD WOLVES (now out on DVD and Blu-ray) through Quentin Tarantino’s raving. And it’s easy to see why when you’ve got the setup of some poor shmuck chained to a chair, his unhinged tormentor delivering a humorously sadistic monologue before unleashing the bloody pain. But beyond the kind of unbearable shenanigans that might have the morally outraged screaming “torture porn!” lies a wonderfully twisted, and appallingly funny thriller that’s far more Hitchcock than Tarantino as a seeming child killer is given his just deserts – delivered courtesy […]Read On »

INTERVIEW: HANNIBAL gets twisted score by Brian Reitzell

HANNIBAL | ©2013 NBC

You might argue that the spark for film scores to get industrially dark was lit when the scraping metallic music of Nine Inch Nail’s song “Closer” ran over the unforgettably disturbing opening titles of SEVEN. Now this bleakly transfixing style has become all the rage, from the visceral video forensics of CSI to the big screen torture dungeons of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and THE CALLER. But in a media obsessed with churning out serial killers to this alt. rock inspired bump-and-grind, the one psychopath creation that remains unequalled in ghoulish popularity is Hannibal Lector, the gourmand cannibal […]Read On »

TV Review: NASHVILLE – Season 1 – “Pilot” – Series Premiere

Robert Wisdom, Charles Esten, Connie Britton, Eric Close, Hayden Panettiere, Powers Boothe, Sam Palladio, Clare Bowen, Jonathan Jackson in NASHVILLE - Season 1 | ©2012 ABC/Craig Sjodin

Stars: Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere, Charles Esten, Eric Close, Powers Boothe, Clare Bowen, Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio, Robert Wisdom Writer: Callie Khouri, series created by Callie Khouri Director: R.J. Cutler Network: ABC, Wednesdays at 10 PM Original Airdate: October 10, 2012 The concept of a primetime soap set in and around the Nashville music scene conjures visions of over-the-top glitz and Southern-accented catfights. Well, shame on us (me, anyway) for anticipatory stereotyping, because NASHVILLE, while it certainly has its sudsy aspects, proves to be a well-grounded drama, with characters who behave like recognizable human beings and music that sounds like […]Read On »

AMERICAN IDOL Season 11 Recap: Joshua Ledet kicked off with Phillips and Sanchez the Final 2

Joshua Ledet is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL - Season 11 | ©2012 Fox/Frank Micelotta

In what has become one of the most boring AMERICAN IDOL competitions since Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox battled it out on Season 9, the reality show competition whittled down the contestants from three to two with Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez. That meant the powerhouse singer with the golden Gospel voice Joshua Ledet was eliminated. Jennifer Lopez was in tears as Ledet sang his swan song, “It’s A Man’s, Man’s World” and brought his mom up on stage. Meanwhile, Phillips and Sanchez breathed a sigh of relief going into next week which, not surprising, will see Phillips take the […]Read On »

THE X FACTOR Season 1 Recap: The Stereo Hogzz are turned off during latest elimination

The Stereo Hogzz are eliminated on THE X FACTOR - Season 1 - "The Top 11 Perform" | ©2011 Fox/Ray Mickshaw

The Top 11 went down to 10 last night on THE X FACTOR which saw the second “group” eliminated from the talent competition. Last week, Intensity went home, and this week two groups landed in the bottom two – The Stereo Hogzz and Lakoda Rayne. This brings up the issue of whether or not audiences HATE groups in these kind of competition or if they’re severely punishing Paula Abdul who is managing the groups. Ironically enough, both The Stereo Hogzz and Lakoda Rayne are by far better than some of the solo performers on the show. And both could be […]Read On »

The year of living musically at the 36th TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Toronto Internation Film Festival (TIFF) logo

Toronto beefed it’s celebrity profile in 2011 at the 36th Annual Toronto International Film Festival by having a slew of music documentaries. Interestingly they were all about musicians who have heavily dabbled in film in the past. Here’s a quick look… THE ARTIST: U2 THE FILM: FROM THE SKY DOWN GENERAL CONSENSUS: Decent enough look at a band at the crossroads in 1991, one forgets how close they came to imploding. U2 the band still cries out for a career spanning definitive movie and this ain’t it. Music cult fans will appreciate seeing cult legend producer/musician Brian Eno in action. […]Read On »

Network: NBC Original Telecast: June 29, 2011 A one hour results show for THE VOICE? Really? NBC didn’t feel the need to stretch it to two hours plus? What is wrong with these people! Well, all I can say is Thank you!  Thank you NBC for the most painless results show in the history of these reality singing competitions After whittling the contestants down to four finalists (one from each of the Coaches Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera), it’s now time to crown a champion. First, every contestant got one more chance to sing – […]Read On »

THE VOICE recap, photos and reveal of the Final Four for Season 1

Blake Shelton, Dia Frampton on THE VOICE - Season 1 - Semi-Finals Results Show | ©2011 NBC/Lewis Jacobs

AMERICAN IDOL has perfected the art of procrastination when it comes to dragging out their results shows. It’s something that’s incredibly annoying and finely tuned week in and week out. Now, NBC’s THE VOICE gets to showcase their first official Results Show during the same week an episode has aired and damn did they get it right. It was mystery meat when it came to how the scores from the coaches and the audience was going to be added together, but the final reveal was actually quite clever. Essentially, the coaches had 100 points to divvy up between both of […]Read On »

AMERICAN IDOL recap: Stefano Langone finally gets the overdramatic boot

Stefano Langone is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL - Season 10 - Final 7 elimination night | ©2011 Fox/Michael Becker

So it was time for Stefano Langone to go home this week on Season 10 of the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL. Well, I can’t say that I didn’t see this one coming given I have predicted his departure from the show for the past four weeks in a row. And, honestly, he should have been gone a long time ago before this week. No way in hell Pia Toscano should be gone and not Stefano. With his crazy eyes, weird facial expressions and wacky overdramatic nature to his performances (not to mention his singing ballad after ballad) finally […]Read On »
