With GLEE entering Season 3, controversy has dogged the Fox show in the last few weeks. Some of it stems with co-creator Ryan Murphy talking about writing three of the show’s primary leads off the show (Chris Colfer, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith) at the end of this season by having them graduating, but failing to mention he was quietly developing a spin-off for them. It all blew up in everyone’s face, with tons of back-pedaling, and at today’s Summer 2011 Television Critics Association executive session, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly spoke about it from the network perspective. “The public nature […]Read On »

TCA 2011: Fox talks about the greenlight of COSMOS: A SPACE-TIME ODYSSEY

Carl Sagan's COSMOS - DVD cover

The last thing anyone would expect the Fox network to do would be a documentary sequel to the hit 1980s PBS/Carl Sagan hosted and produced documentary science series COSMOS, but it’s official – they’ve greenlit it. Titled COSMOS: A SPACE-TIME ODYSSEY, the series will surprisingly be produced by FAMILY GUY creator Seth MacFarlane. At today’s Summer 2011 Television Critics Association Fox session, Fox’s Entertainment President Kevin Reilly spoke about picking up this property to series. “It’s a unique property that doesn’t feel like a natural fit on Fox, but it was the most successful thing PBS has done,” explains Reilly. AMERICAS MOST WANTED logo

When Fox announced that AMERICA’S MOST WANTED, a Saturday night staple since the network began, wouldn’t be returning for a full new season, questions arose as to why. At today’s Television Critics Association press day for Fox, the network’s Entertainment President Kevin Reilly talked about the reasoning of scaling the show back to four specials this year instead of a full season. “It was an unsung hero and did a tremendous job of delivering ratings every week, but it moved into a loss situation for us over the last couple of years,” explains Reilly. “We valued the show, carried it, […]Read On »

When is a show cancelled, but not cancelled? That’s been the mystery behind the Christian Slater comedy BREAKING IN that did pretty good during midseason this year on Fox after AMERICAN IDOL. It wasn’t enough for it to get an official Season 2 renewal, but in recent months, there’s been movement that could bring the series back. One of the big wins for the Fox network last season was the risky move of its signature science-fiction series FRINGE from Thursday nights to Fridays – resulting in sustained ratings and giving Fox a stronghold on what has been a traditionally difficult night for them. At today’s Summer 2011 Television Critics Association session with Fox Entertianment President Kevin Reilly, he says their expectations for FRINGE going into Season 4 on Fridays is more of the same. “One of the good things of having a strong network is we can support creative shows that should be on the air,” says […]Read On »

With HOUSE returning for Season 8 with a leaner cast this fall, and a long negotiation process that delayed the announcement it would be returning, the question mark of whether the show will return for a Season 9 was in the air at today’s Summer 2011 Television Critics Association session for Fox. Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly says he still has no word if this will be the show’s final season. “I can’t confirm it’s the last season,” says Reilly. “Hugh [Laurie] is mulling it. The producers are. This is the original team of creators who have been there from […]Read On »

I see those shows as compatible and feeding off each other. I’m pretty darn happy with BONES on Thursday night. As CSI [on CBS] was fading, BONES is looking as resilient as ever. It’s a really valuable show to […]Read On »

While speaking with NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt at this summer’s 2011 TCA, ASSIGNMENT X asked about the status of THE EVENT wrap-up movie. Although things aren’t set in stone, Greenblatt does hint that a final decision about its ultimate fate could be decided quite soon. “It’s been discussed with Syfy and a few weeks ago it seemed more possible than it does today, but I honestly don’t know,” says Greenblatt. However, Greenblatt is quick to point out that THE EVENT, if it does get this last-minute reprise, will not air on NBC. “If it happens, it would definitely be […]Read On »

With THE OFFICE losing Steve Carell this season, and James Spader coming in to fill that gap, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt is confident the  show will continue to prosper on Thursday nights. “My expectations are always very measured, so that we can under-expect and hopefully over-deliver,” says Greenblatt. “THE OFFICE is a very important to us. Like I said a few minutes ago, it’s our number one show in all kinds of demos. Shows go through transitions as they age and I think losing Steve is one of those. And I was at the first table reading a couple […]Read On »

With CBS and ABC shuddering their long-running soaps, NBC is still fully committed to its daytime soap warhorse DAYS OF OUR LIVES. “It’s the only soap we have and I think it does relatively well for us,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt at today’s 2011 Summer TCA press session. Greenblatt also says the other networks shedding their schedules of soaps could also open up more of an audience for NBC’s DAYS, but Greenblatt cautions that this genre may “sort of be going into the twilight years of its existence with all the other talk shows and syndicated shows that are […]Read On »
