Movie Review: RUNNER RUNNER

RUNNER RUNNER movie poster | ©2013 20th Century Fox

Rating: R Stars: Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck, Gemma Arterton, Anthony Mackie, John Heard Writers: Brian Koppelman & David Levien Director: Brad Furman Distributor: 20th Century Fox/Regency Release Date: October 4, 2013 In real life and in movies, smart and talented young men are swept off their feet business-wise by older and more successful men. This tale is told often, but it seems to resonate more with filmmakers and actors than it does with audiences, mainly because there has to be something beyond just the familiar plot mechanics to make it resonate, and too often, the directors and writers confuse window […]Read On »

Movie Review: GRAVITY

GRAVITY movie poster | ©2013 Warner Bros.

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney Writers: Alfonso Cuaron & Jonas Cuaron Director: Alfonso Cuaron Distributor: Warner Bros. Release Date: October 4, 2013 Director/writer Alfonso Cuaron proves two things with GRAVITY. The first is he is one of a tiny band of directors – James Cameron being the patron saint of the group – who is actually use 3D in a manner that is integral rather than a fancy afterthought. In the midst of a terrifying sequence, a piece of metal comes flying off the screen and we’re so immersed in what’s happening that we actually flinch away from […]Read On »

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE movie poster | ©2013 Entertainment One

Rating: R Stars: Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner, Jack Gore, Kassie DePaiva, Kelly McGillis, Wyatt Russell, Michael Parks Writers: Nick Dimici & Jim Mickle, based on SOMOS LO QUE HAY, written and directed by Jorge Michel Grau Director: Jim Mickle Distributor: Entertainment One Release Date: September 27, 2013 Families that keep to themselves tend to draw social suspicion, and are therefore a staple of horror movies, with the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE still the prime example of the form. Toronto International Film Festival Postscript: Found Footage

With more than 300 films to choose from during the Toronto Film Festival a great deal of planning and luck figure equally into the mix. The best is when you give up on one film and just randomly drop into another screening. Here’s my four happy accidents of 2013 after I ran (nearly) screaming from several films that will remain nameless including a 3-D mountain climbing Australian documentary and a dreary drugs-are-bad drama set in the early 1980s.

Toronto International Film Festival Wrap Up: Part 3 – The Cold

THE UNKNOWN KNOWN | ©2013 Weinstein Company

It’s time to conclude what happened at the Toronto International Film Festival by dividing up the films into three categories. So here are the winners, losers and something in-between so just for fun I’ve broken them down into buzz terms, HOT, WARM and COLD. Part 3: THE COLD (BUZZ+CRITICAL REACTION+AUDIENCE COMMENTS) YOU ARE HERE Road trip comedy drama with Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis CONSENSUS: Writer/director Matthew Weiner’s surprising limp big screen debut. The leads are irritating, the plot so-so, the overall effect dull. Maybe Weiner just too tired after obsessing over every MAD MAN detail. Would make a good […]Read On »

Toronto International Film Festival Wrap Up: Part 2 – The Warm

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl in RUSH | ©2013 Imagine Entertainment

It’s time to re-evaluate what happened at the Toronto International Film Festival by dividing up the films into three categories. So here are the winners, losers and something in-between so just for fun I’ve broken them down into buzz terms, HOT, WARM and COLD. Part 2: THE WARM (BUZZ+CRITICAL REACTION+AUDIENCE COMMENTS) THE FIFTH ESTATE Warts and all Julian Assange / WikiLeaks story starring Benedict Cumberbatch. CONSENSUS: While it’s nice to see Bill Condon (GODS AND MONSTERS) not directing another TWILIGHT movie this was a mixed bag. Most applauded that he asked more question than he answered and praised Cumberbatch’s layered […]Read On »

DVD Review: BLOOD

BLOOD movie poster | ©2013 RLJ Entertainment

Rating: Unrated Stars: Paul Bettany, Mark Strong, Stephen Graham, Brian Cox Writer: Bill Gallagher Director: Nick Murphy Distributor: RLJ Entertainment Release Date: home video/digital download, September 10, 2013 A British crime drama – hell, any kind of production whatever – starring Paul Bettany, Mark Strong, Brian Cox and Stephen Graham is going to be worth seeing. As it happens, BLOOD has merits above and beyond its cast, with director Nick Murphy and writer Bill Gallagher maintaining a near-claustrophobic tension as Bettany’s English police detective Joe Fairburn grapples with guilt, fear and rage. Joe works in a precinct with his brother […]Read On »

Movie Review: RUSH

RUSH movie poster | ©2013 Universal Pictures

Rating: R Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Pierfrancesco Favino Writer: Peter Morgan Director: Ron Howard Distributor: Universal Pictures Release Date: September 20, 2013 RUSH describes both the motion of the Formula One race cars at the center of this film, and the emotion their drivers get when racing them. It does not describe the pace of the film, although RUSH proceeds at a smooth pace, nor the sensation most of the audience will experience, albeit it’s perfectly watchable. For much of the 1970s, there was a rivalry both on-track and off (the professional rivalry is […]Read On »
