CD Review: ANOTHER EARTH original soundtrack

ANOTHER EARTH soundtrack | ©2011 Milan Records

Nothing says “sci fi” like the bleeping weirdness of electronics, whether it’s Louis and Bebe Baron’s bizarre, futuristic frequencies in FORBIDDEN PLANET, the pulsing, eerie sterility that Gil Melle brought to THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, or the sinister, metallically grinding synths that Brad Fiedel constructed THE TERMINATOR’s killer robot with. With the dance vibes of rave and hip-hop finding their way into film scoring, courtesy of such performers-turned-composers as B.T. (GO) and The Chemical Brothers (HANNA), let alone Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Oscar win for THE SOCIAL NETWORK, electro sci-fi scoring has somehow become a warmer, more energetic place, if […]Read On »

CD Review: FINAL DESTINATION 5 soundtrack

FINAL DESTINATION 5 soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande Records

Death wasn’t proud when it took Shirley Walker after her three, mordantly thrilling scores to the FINAL DESTINATION saga. And though its fifth verse is the same as the first, Walker’s black-humored approach has been continued with telltale, twisted finesse by Brian Tyler, who joined the franchise with entry four. Even with all those numbers, the series has arguable found its best footing since the original with five, buoyed on by Tyler’s bombastic approach that plays each ghastly Rube-Goldberg gore wind-up with the freshness of the series’ first death. Beginning with a rock guitar and orchestral head banger that throws […]Read On »

CD Review: PARASOMNIA soundtrack

PARASOMNIA soundtrack | © 2011 Buysoundtrax

Director William Malone gave the somnambulist thrills of THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI a slasher spin for his horror flick PARASOMNIA, his imagination especially inspired for its German expressionist dream sequences. But perhaps PARASOMNIA’s most bizarrely remarkable contribution is its surrealistic score by Nicholas Pike, who’s previously conjured musical nightmares for SLEEPWALKERS, THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS and LOVE OBJECT (let alone BUD THE CHUD). His own partnership with Malone has been no les fearfully fruitful with credits including FREDDY’S NIGHTMARES, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, MASTERS OF HORROR and FEARdotCOM– a score whose nerve-jangling creepiness stands as a piker when […]Read On »

CD review: UP original soundtrack

UP soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

If Michael Giacchino brilliantly stepped into the shoes of John Barry and Henry Mancini to musically embody a family of superheroes and one rat’s exceptional taste buds, then 2009’s UP was the Disney animated extravaganza where Giacchino’s own, nostalgic voice rang loud and clear to the tune of an Oscar. Where I’ll be in the crotchety, Carl-worthy minority of those who’d want to take a cane to the unabashed cuteness of what awaits an old grumpus and an antically annoying boy scout on top of the forbidden mesa they float to, there’s zero denying the tear-jerking brilliance of UP’s life […]Read On »

CD Review: MONTE CARLO original soundtrack

MONTE CARLO soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande Records

For as impressively big as Michael Giacchino can get, it’s often his small, unsung scores that are just as impressive. MONTE CARLO tween chick-aimed romance fits the bill nicely indeed. As opposed to imagining three young women finding their Prince Charmings in a jet set fairy tale kingdom, Giacchino’s alternately delicate lyricism and jazzily prancing rhythms might make you thinking you’re hearing that long-awaited RATATOUILLE sequel wherein the rodent Remy falls in love. It’s a measure of how much Mancini-esque caviar also appears here, with a more-than-healthy seasoning of Burt Bacharach to boot. You’ll definitely know your way to San […]Read On »

CD review: THE GOLDEN CHILD soundtrack (3,000 limited edition)

THE GOLDEN CHILD soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

After putting out a 3-CD set of Basil Poledouris’ numerous pit stops towards ultimately “fixing” his score for the Kurt Russell classic BREAKDOWN, La La Land goes the troubled creative process one better by releasing a second triple album that charts another Paramount movie’s long road to its final score. This time it’s both John Barry’s elegant, tossed work, along with Michel Colombier’s final, and far funkier soundtrack for Eddie Murphy’s THE GOLDEN CHILD– a far less-regarded star vehicle that’s foremost a winner for soundtrack fans as the discs contrast two disparate musical approaches. Using John Barry’s slow, jazzily elegant […]Read On »

CD Review: SHOOT TO KILL soundtrack (2,000 limited edition)

SHOOT TO KILL soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

Between hearing the classically adventurous vine swinging of Tarzan in GREYSTOKE, vengefully playing Scott Glenn delivering a whole lot of whoop ass in the original MAN ON FIRE, capturing the fury when KING KONG LIVES or hearing the jazzy football ennui of NORTH DALLAS FORTY, the genteel John Scott has proven he certainly knows a thing or two about how to play macho attitudes and the great outdoors, Both factors would figure prominently in one of his most acclaimed Hollywood scores for 1988’s SHOOT TO KILL. Street-smart FBI agent Sidney Potier was the greenhorn when teamed with grizzled outdoorsman Tom […]Read On »

CD Review: WINNIE THE POOH soundtrack

WINNIE THE POOH soundtrack | ©2011 Walt Disney Records

The charm’s the thing as Disney makes a welcome return to the animated innocence of A.A. Milne’s Hundred Acre Wood with WINNIE THE POOH. Just because something’s as cute as a well-worn plush animal doesn’t mean that some new musical fluffies can’t be put into this tubby little cubby, especially when you’ve got Gen X darling Zooey Deschanel giving an enchanted new spin to The Sherman Brothers’ beloved theme song. The magic that the legendary Disney duo put into the tunes of Pooh (along with the likes of MARY POPPINS and THE JUNGLE BOOK) is wonderfully present in the house […]Read On »

CD Review: THE SENDER soundtrack (1,500 limited edition)

THE SENDER soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

Ever since his mystical synthesizers conjured the fog that King Uther rode on to begat Arthur in EXCALIBUR, composer Trevor Jones has had a distinctive charm of making for walls of hypnotic sound, their haunting, yet gently rolling sustains and siren voices for such scores as DARK CITY, ANGEL HEART and HIDEAWAY leading to some dark epiphany on the other side of reality. In the case of 1982’s THE SENDER, Jones’ ghostly melodic washes are the eerie visions that a young mental patient projects onto those unfortunate enough to be in his range. While there are any number of jarring […]Read On »

CD Review: PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW soundtrack

PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW soundtrack | ©2011 Film Score Monthly

One of those great, groovy WTF early 70’s flicks, PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW cast randy Rock Hudson as a football coach-cum-guidance counselor, whom most of the high school is falling in the sack, couch and car with when they aren’t falling over dead. While penned by of no less than STAR TREK’s Gene Roddenberry for the erotic directorial vision of BARBARELLA’s Roger Vadim, the swinging feather in MAIDS’ cap was its score by Lalo Schifrin. A master of pop jazz whose rhythms had accompanied no small amount of sensual lady killing before, Schifrin’s hepness play humorously well into […]Read On »
