Fall Television Preview 2014: ABC

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER tells the story of a hot shot attorney that takes on the worst criminals' defense | © 2014 ABC

While ABC continues to be one of the biggest networks on television in overall ratings, the coveted 18-49 demographic seems to be moving away from them. This isn’t much of a surprise because the entire demographic is moving away from watching network television to the Internet, Netflix and cable. Still, the network has amassed a lovely string of programming that is followed by many, adored by more and is going strong with six new projects in the new fall season. Now, going into the 2014-2015 season, what new shows do we have to look forward to and what are their […]Read On »

Trying to dress Sadie Robertson with her overprotective dad critiquing every thread of garment she puts on isn’t easy. If it was up to her DUCK DYNASTY daddy she’d come out in a potato sack! Still, the night was not hers, instead BACK TO THE FUTURE‘s Lea Thompson, along with […]Read On »

2014 Toronto International Film Festival Wrap Up: Part 2 – The Warm List

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING | ©2014 Focus Features

Killer cubs, hipsters, physicists and more constitute the good movies that fell short of great at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. PART 2: THE WARM WHILE WE’RE YOUNG Film festival favorite Noah Baumbach is admittedly an acquired taste (think Waspy Woody Allen), but there is no denying he gets some of the best work out of Ben Stiller. Four years ago they worked well in GREENBERG, this time it’s a tale of aging hipsters (Stiller and Naomi Watts) getting a young couple (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) to show them how to be relevant again. Funny, poignant and somewhat […]Read On »

Fall Television Preview 2014: FOX

Fox has been slowly building its portfolio of shows over the last few years with a group of sitcoms, some good dramas and a very strong sports package. Of course, many of the promising series the network created have been shuffled off to deadsville. But mostly, the network has been garnering some strength in its programming and even bringing back some old favorites – 24 was brought back earlier this year (considered last year’s season) and was a smashing success. Now, going into the 2014-2015 season, what new shows do we have to look forward to and what are their […]Read On »

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES movie poster | ©2014 Universal Pictures

Rating: R Stars: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Maurice Compte, David Harbour, Adam David Thompson, Sebastian Roche Writer: Scott Frank, based on the novel by Lawrence Block Director: Scott Frank Distributor: Universal Release Date: September 19, 2014 Although Liam Neeson still plays all sorts of roles, these days – after two TAKEN movies, plus NON-STOP – it’s hard to see him in an action thriller and not have the equation of his character = badass in mind. A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES tries to play that down a little bit so that we have a modicum of fear […]Read On »

2014 Toronto International Film Festival Wrap Up: Part 1 – The Hot List

TIFF 2014 logo

The 2014 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival will go down in history as the year of the actor. With the absence of breakout films like last years mighty duo, GRAVITY and 12 YEARS A SLAVE, critics and audiences dug deeper and ended up focusing on the actors. And I mean the actors, much more so than the usual festival stars, the directors. Several mainstream actors in search of a makeover of sorts, including Richard Gere, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Chris Evans and Bill Murray appeared in smaller, grittier, character driven fare. The results were decidedly mixed. As in […]Read On »

Movie Review: THE SCRIBBLER

THE SCRIBBLER movie poster | ©2014 Xlerator Media

Rating: R Stars: Katie Cassidy, Garret Dillahunt, Michelle Trachtenberg, Michael Imperioli, Gina Gershon, Sasha Grey, Kunal Nayyar, Ashlynn Yennie, Eliza Dushku, Billy Campbell Writer: Dan Schaffer Director: John Suits Distributor: Xlerator Media Release Date: September 19, 2014 THE SCRIBBLER can’t be accused of having too few ideas. In fact, the movie, written by Dan Schaffer and directed by John Suits, has plots that crisscross so much that they tend to cancel one another out, even though it looks as though the effect is meant to be cumulative. The primary and most intriguing notion here is that Suki (Katie Cassidy), already […]Read On »

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman, Samuel Anderson Writer: Steven Moffat Director: Douglas Mckinnon   Original Telecast: September 13, 2014 Network: BBC America Steven Moffat is a master of the DOCTOR WHO scare episode. He has a unique ability to create new foes for The Doctor that make your hackles go up, and make you want to hide behind the couch the same way you did when you were a kid watching the classic WHO serial “The Brain of Morbius.” First he gave us the Weeping Angels in “Blink”. Then we had to contend with the Vashta Nerada in “Silence in […]Read On »
